SkoCode AmeriCorps Member Position Description
Program Overview:
At SkoCode, we believe providing Indigenous students with hands-on experience in emerging
technologies is crucial for preparing them for future leadership roles in their communities.
Unfortunately, there are not enough educational pathways for Native youth to meaningfully engage with
technology and computer science (CS). As of 2021, only 20% of high schools on reservations offered a
foundational computer science class.
SkoCode (Let's Go Code) is an AmeriCorps program housed under Indigitize Computer Science. Our goal
at Indigitizeis to engage 10,000 Indigenous students in Indigenized computer science experiences by
working directly with schools, districts, and teachers, and the SkoCode program will support those
efforts.
Service Position Summary:
As a SkoCode member you will build relationships with community partners to get people excited
about computer science. We’ll provide you with tools, training, and support to do so. SkoCode
members will be placed at various partner sites throughout the community, such as schools,
afterschool programs, with non profits, and at regional CS related events. Members will be expected
to create and present high-quality, culturally-relevant computer science learning experiences for
young people in both small and large group settings. Members will also be responsible for capturing
program impact through tracking student participation and administering surveys after lessons.
Technical Skills
- Computer Literacy: Our ideal applicants are comfortable with the basic use of computers and
capacity to teach basic computer skills to our members.
- No Prior CS Experience Needed: We don’t require applicants to have previous computer science
Community Connection
- Our ideal candidates will already have relationships in the community where they will serve.
- Willingness to seek and build relationships with new community members
Professionalism and Work Ethic:
- Conduct: We’re looking for individuals who can maintain professionalism in school settings,
defined in the Policy and Procedures and Member Handbook.
SkoCode Program Qualifications:
- Willingness to Learn: Applicants who have an interest in learning and teaching aspects of
- Desire to Deliver: Ability to learn, adopt, and deliver training material from the Indigitize
AmeriCorps Required Qualifications:
- At least 17 years old at start of service
- Must be a high school graduate, GED recipient, or working toward attaining a high school
diploma or GED during the term of service.
- Preferred experience: Bachelors Degree, and/or Involvement in educational or after-school
- Be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States
- Ability to complete full term of service within time frame listed
Educational Background
- Minimum Requirement: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred Experience: Bachelor’s degree, and/or involvement in educational or after-school
programs, especially within Indigenous communities.

Service Commitment
- Time Requirement: We expect our members to make SkoCode their primary professional

Term of Service / Time Commitment: This is aThree-quarter time (TQT) national and community service
position requiring, at a minimum, a total of 1200 hours during the year approximately 30 hours/week.
The position anticipated start date is July 28th. Member will be expected to serve Monday – Friday,
between 8 am – 5 pm with some weekend or evening commitments, and for any requirements for
members to participate in events at the site as required.
Training and Support Provided: Members receive significant training and experience in community
engagement, project implementation, leadership, diverse populations, and more. Up to 20% of total
hours served may be spent on applicable approved training provided by the program. Members will be
supervised and supported by a host site supervisor , as well as SkoCode Program Staff.
Location and Service Conditions: Positions will be based across New Mexico, Arizona, South Dakota, and
Colorado. This will involve travel for a week-long orientation in Albuquerque and to and from partner
sites within your region. Position will involve occasional travel for days of service outdoors and/or in a
school or community building.
