The Ivy Street School is a small, year-round, private residential special education school committed to advancing equity and access for young people living with disabilities. Serving neurodiverse adolescents ages 13-22, we focus on supporting the whole child through a student-first model driven by collaboration, innovative thinking, and a commitment to deeply knowing our students.

SUMMARY
We are seeking a warm, engaging, and flexible Culinary Teaching Assistant to work closely with our Kitchen Supervisor. This role combines meal preparation responsibilities with a critical teaching component, supporting students in developing culinary skills, achieving treatment goals, and fostering independence. The ideal candidate will bring culinary expertise and a passion for working with neurodiverse youth.
The culinary program at Ivy Street School plays a vital role in empowering students with autonomous meal preparation skills and professional opportunities they can carry into adulthood. Our program transforms lives by nurturing students’ independence and providing hands-on learning experiences that foster confidence and practical knowledge.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Meal Preparation and Kitchen Operations
· Prepare meals for students and staff, ensuring dietary needs and preferences are met.
· Contribute creative ideas to school menus to offer diverse and nutritious options for students.
· Manage food ordering, storage, and inventory to maintain kitchen operations.
Student Engagement and Instruction
· Co-facilitate culinary classes and after-school cooking groups, helping students build meal preparation and cooking skills.
· Support students in their daily activities, aligning with their treatment goals and therapeutic plans.
· Maintain a safe and therapeutic learning environment using Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and the ARC Framework of Trauma-Informed Care.
Collaboration and Professionalism
· Partner with the Residential and Education departments to provide cohesive support to students.
· Participate in crisis intervention when needed, guided by training in therapeutic frameworks.
· Actively contribute to the culinary program's vision by fostering an environment of growth and creativity for students.
COMPETENCIES
· General food handling and meal preparation skills required; prior kitchen experience preferred.
· ServSafe certification is highly desirable.
· Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with students and colleagues.
· Demonstrated ability to provide and receive feedback constructively.
· Consistent professionalism and excellent attendance.
· Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
· Flexibility to work some holiday shifts as required.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, OR REGISTRATION
· Valid driver’s license required.
· CPR and First Aid certification (can be obtained upon hire).
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
· Culinary experience preferred; relevant certifications or training in Food Management, Culinary Arts, or a related field are highly desirable; equivalent experience may be considered.
