The Opportunity

Would capturing stories that cover a wide variety of topics representative of our communities throughout Oregon and Washington pique your interest? OPB is hiring a Cinematographer / Editor to join our production services team.

In this role, you will be a part of a highly skilled production team that gets deployed across different programs and projects collaborating with producers to bring captivating stories to our audiences Your ability to realize a vison, capture quality footage and bring storytelling to life will help you be successful in this position. The main focus of this role will be working with the Science and Environment team on Oregon Field Guide and All Science. No Fiction. Assignments may vary depending on current demand. The production team members come from a variety of backgrounds from marine field biologist to photojournalist. All share a passion for capturing and sharing human experiences in arts, culture and outdoors.

Position Details

The Cinematographer / Editor works closely with producers to shoot and edit stories in accordance with the high standards set by OPB. This position shoots and edits video in a variety of styles, lengths and formats for distribution on several platforms including digital, social media and television.

Responsibilities

40% - Videography and Lighting : Work with the producer to coordinate and shoot stories. Demonstrate creative skills in lighting and composition to bring the production to fruition.

40% - Video Editing : Work closely with producers to bring their vision for the project to life. Work quickly and efficiently to complete projects in a manner that enhances the vision of the producer and keeps a project on schedule and on budget. Maintain a high level of competence with the edit systems, primarily Adobe Premiere. This would include work flows related to Asset Management.

10% - Produce stories and essays, work on promos and in-house video and editing projects. Occasional production work in a studio.

5% - Production planning : Identify production needs; identify equipment and related needs. Work with producers and crew to ensure production quality. Evaluate technical requirements for field productions. Help maintain production equipment as required.

5% - Keep abreast of technical and production developments in video production, and ability to help disseminate that information to others. Ability to adapt to new technologies as needed.

Working Conditions

Work is done in the field and in an office or edit suite using a computer and other office or production equipment. Fieldwork includes travel to remote locations across the region involving overnight and evening or weekend work. Out-of-town trips are normally three to six days at a time and most shooting is done during warm weather months (spring, summer, fall). Field shoots may involve working outdoors in inclement weather where modern conveniences are not available, hiking and other moderately arduous physical activity, carrying equipment up to 50 pounds, using varying modes of transportation and / or sleeping in non-traditional accommodations. Shifts may vary and can require early morning or late-night work times, on weekends, and at times split shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five years’ experience shooting and editing in a variety of formats and lengths, and with a variety of camera or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
  • An eye for storytelling and the ability to work closely with producers and on camera subjects.
  • Experience with long form interviews and demonstrated skill at shooting interviews.
  • Extensive experience with lighting and lighting equipment for video photography.
  • A strong technical understanding of cameras, sound gear, and edit systems, especially Adobe Premiere.
  • Current driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Must be able to walk up to 5 miles in a day with a heavy pack (50lbs) off trail in backcountry, safely move with swiftness and agility in backcountry situations, including some climbing, work at high elevations, safely work outdoors in extreme temperatures (both hot and cold), cross country and downhill ski and snowshoe with a pack and / or other gear, and work on rivers, including in a whitewater raft, in a backcountry situation.
  • Experience using music to compliment video in an edited story.
  • Enthusiasm for and understanding of the mission of OPB and for the role of public media in a changing media environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to shoot live performance in a studio, and on a stage or other setting.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Adobe Premiere edit systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with many different types of video cameras.
  • Advanced knowledge of lighting techniques and lighting equipment.
  • Ability to produce video content independent of a producer or script.
  • Experience with creating content for digital and social media platforms.
  • Familiarity with After Effects.
  • Ability to communicate in a language in addition to English.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Experience with drone photography and part 107 licensed.
  • Outdoor certifications and / or training (particularly through NOLS, Mazamas, etc.).

  • This position reports to Director of Production Operations and is union represented and benefits eligible
  • The probable hiring range for this nonexempt position is between $28.00 and $34.20, depending on qualifications
