JOB OVERVIEW:

The New Product Development (NPD) Leader is responsible for leading the product development team in prioritization, initiation, research, design, and implementation of NPD projects. The NPD Leader will lead the NPD function in the various aspects of new products ranging from software, mechanical, electrical and overall project completion. They will serve as the primary contact for NPD projects and interface with senior leadership regularly. As the functional leader they will develop annual goals and objectives related to supporting the growth and development of NPD in response to present and future needs. This position will also lead the creation and continuous improvement of processes and best practices in the areas of product development and project management and will be responsible for building project management competency.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

NPD and Project Management

  • Develop and manage the NPD portfolio of projects: approved, active, and potential projects, including approved, active, and potential projects (NPD, Upgrades, modifications and PO-based projects).
  • Maintain alignment on project portfolio with senior leadership.
  • Accurately estimate resources and requirements; establish clear project scopes, plans, and timelines. Drive project completion to ensure on-time, in-scope delivery.
  • Create process for effectively gathering project requirements (customer, business, etc.) and drive adoption across the organization.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Product Line Leaders, Operations and Quality teams to gather comprehensive insights and business requirements.
  • Implement project management processes and tools for improved project planning, tracking, execution, and communication of status.
  • Employ project risk identification and management practices to ensure consistency in meeting timelines.
  • Provide monthly updates for Sales & senior leadership on custom and NPD projects (status, risks, mitigations, features, etc.).
  • Formulates policies, processes, and procedures in NPD and project management which assure consistent, standardized, and replicable development and manufacturing methods. Uses these to drive predictable project completion and seamless transfer to manufacturing with measurable improvements in market acceptance, manufacturability, and quality.

NPD team leadership

  • Direct and lead multiple concurrent NPD engineering projects across multiple locations. Work with both NPD and greater Engineering team (when needed) to staff NPD project needs.
  • Lead NPD engineering team members: day-to-day performance management, mentorship, team member growth / development.
  • Actively participate in the performance management and individual development planning processes for direct reports.
  • Asses team competencies, capability, and capacity. Identify strengths and opportunities. Create plans for addressing opportunities as well as projected future needs. Gain and maintain alignment on plans within the Technology group and with senior management.
  • Conduct regular NPD meetings with active team members providing status updates and requests for support to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide direction in product design, overcoming technical challenges, and maintaining market leading technology.
  • Create and follow standard processes across all Machine Solutions companies in the areas of evaluation, staffing and scheduling.

General

  • This individual must interact and communicate effectively with multiple disciplines including Operations, Quality Assurance, Sales, and senior leadership.
  • Complete ad-hoc projects / work as needed.
  • Travel to other divisions and customer sites up to 50%.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position directly supervises the mechanical, software, and electrical NPD team members as well as project management team members (as needed).

This position indirectly supervises cross-functional engineering team members in conjunction with the Director of Engineering and respective Engineering Leaders.

Location

Must be located at a Machine Solutions physical plant location.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education And/Or Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university and 10 years progressive engineering and leadership experience; or 15 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience as a functional manager with direct reports. Project management training / PMP certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands of the role involve prolonged periods of sitting at a desk, using a computer, and engaging in repetitive hand movements for tasks like typing or writing. Occasional standing, walking, and lifting objects up to 20 pounds may be required. This role may also include frequent use of standard office equipment such as printers, copiers, and telephones. Good vision and hearing are needed to perform tasks effectively and communicate with team members.

The work environment for this role is primarily an office setting located near a manufacturing facility. While the office is climate-controlled and typically quiet, occasional exposure to noise, vibrations, or odors from the nearby production area may occur. Employees may need to enter the manufacturing floor occasionally, requiring adherence to safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
