The Machinists Institute, a 501c3 nonprofit was created by the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers District 751 to fill a vital role for training and apprenticeship programs for the community. MI provides world class training to current and future aerospace, automotive and manufacturing workers. The Institute focuses on providing living-wage career opportunities through education and training across the state.


The Welding Program Director leads strategic initiatives for welding programs across all Machinists Institute training centers. The Director provides leadership in developing, evaluating and maintaining welding curricula and programs that respond to community needs, prepare students for success and meet the requirements of certifications and regulatory agencies. They will coordinate instructional activities, oversee and manage welding instructors, ensure program quality, and foster student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as subject matter expert for students, instructional staff and advisory committees regarding academic curriculum.
  • Build and maintain course content for welding apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship and stand alone classes and set cost per student enrollment
  • Assists in the development and implementation of strategies that support student enrollment, retention, and success
  • Collect and analyze data for welding program goals in student success, job placement and progress in apprenticeship
  • Ensure welding facilities meet requirements for administering welding related courses and industry certifications such as WABO and AWS
  • Develop and maintain schedule of classes in coordination with regional directors that is responsive to student needs and educational efficiencies
  • Provide ongoing assessment of program design; providing regular reporting to leadership on program effectiveness along with recommendations for improvement
  • Establish and maintain processes and procedures for effective welding instructor selection, onboarding and performance
  • Maintain mentor and site schedules to ensure operational targets are met; optimizing the number of mentors for each location
  • Provide Instruction as needed
  • Provide employer and partner outreach as needed to grow enrollment
  • Manage program budgets; tracking hours and cost allocation for the program
  • Provide where necessary program/job specific, advanced skills training- supporting training and coaching solutions to improve employee performance


The Qualified Candidates will:

  • Have strengths in project planning, project implementation and coordination of stakeholders to meet project goals.
  • Have subject matter expertise across the spectrum of welding classifications and materials
  • Have proven experience in instruction, developing course content (registered apprenticeship preferred) educational program development, and team collaboration.
  • Have strong and demonstrated interpersonal communication skills.
  • Have experience in providing training/orientation in one-on-one, online and group formats.
  • Be able to present program benefits to employers, labor organizations, industry associations, workforce stakeholders and government agencies.
  • Understand outreach opportunities within the community and have experience organizing and participating in events that promote educational programs.
  • Possess a working familiarity with grants, organizational contracts, budgets, project plans and proposals for finding opportunities.
  • Have a proven track record in supervising projects and teams.

Employment in this position is contingent upon consent to and successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for the position is $110,000 to $120,000 and will be negotiated upon potential hire and will be commensurate on the experience level of the candidate. We also provide generous health and welfare benefits, 401K with employer contributions and matching, HSA, both vacation and sick time.
