Position Title:  School Counselor

Location:  MacIntyre Park Middle School

FLSA:  Exempt

Terms of employment:  200 days

Reports to:  Principal

 

 

Primary Function:  Provides school counseling and related guidance services for the normal developmental needs of all the students.

 

Requirements:

  • Educational Level:  Master's Degree in school counseling
  • Certification/License Required:  Valid Georgia Certification in School Counseling[FLD709]
  • Experience:  None
  • Physical Activities:  Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:  Written and Oral Communication; instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learners; student management


PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

General: 

  1. Maintains a pattern of prompt and regular attendance.    
  2. Demonstrates professionalism by reporting to work and assigned duties on time.   
  3. Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency in the use of computer applications as applicable to job responsibilities.
  4. Demonstrates appropriate verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Act in a professional manner and maintains a professional attitude towards the public and colleagues; adheres to cultural diversity guidelines, and exhibits the fundamentals of good public/customer service.
  6. Complies with the school system, state and federal regulations and policies, including the PSC Code of Ethics, as related to job requirements.    
  7. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information and material; adheres to chain-of-command.
  8. Maintains a professional appearance as outlined by local BOE policy.
  9. Maintains and improves knowledge and skills to promote proficiency in the operations of an organized, modern, updated and efficient school.
  10. Participates in professional organizations, workshops, and staff development activities and applies what is learned to the job; accepts new challenges in a professional manner.  
  11. Shows initiative and assumes responsibility for all aspects of job responsibilities; performs routine duties and tasks with little or no direct supervision.
  12. Exhibits time on task and a flexible, cooperative, progressive and hard-working attitude and style.
  13. Monitors compliance with policies and laws concerning areas of responsibility.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the principal. 

 

Counselor:

  1. Plans, develops, and implements a comprehensive school counseling program based on the needs of the students and the school.
  2. Plans, develops, and implements action plans based on the needs of the students and the school.
  3. Provides classroom guidance, school counseling, and individual counseling that relates to the academic, career, and personal/social development of students.
  4. Coordinates with school staff to provide supportive instructional classroom activities that relate to student academic, career, and personal/social development of the student.
  5. Confers and counsels with parents, administrators, and teachers.
  6. Collects and reports on student outcomes from classroom guidance, small group, and individual consultations.
  7. Collects data and prepares reports associated with the position as required by local, state and federal agencies.
  8. Protects the confidentiality of student records and student information.
  9. Helps to identify students with special needs.
  10. Participates in school and county committees.
  11. Facilitates the referral of students and parents to internal and external services.
  12. Facilitates home-school communication by such means as holding conferences, telephoning, and sending written communications.
  13. Reviews and interprets transcripts, student individuals educational plan(IEPs), and test data for students.
  14. Assists in providing placement services by helping teachers and administrators with advisement and scheduling of new and enrolled students.
  15. Stay abreast of state board rules relating to but not limited to student enrollment requirements, student data collection and reporting, and College and Career Ready Performance Indicators (CCRPI).
  16. Coordinates transitional activities with feeder schools.
  17. Assists with the coordination of state and local standardized testing of students.
  18. Interprets standardized tests and state-mandated tests.
  19. Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
