Summary
Pharmacy technicians are responsible for assisting the pharmacists in prescription processing, providing customer service, and maintenance of the pharmacy department. Pharmacy technicians promote the Mackenthun’s Exceptional Experience through all customer and employee interactions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Answering telephone calls and addressing customer questions not requiring a pharmacist's knowledge & clinical decision making.
- Process prescription refill requests, communicating with providers' offices for refills, and receiving authorization; receive written prescriptions from patients, gather required information to prepare prescriptions, and enter data into the computer, preparing prescriptions by counting or pouring medication, labeling containers; filing completed prescriptions into bins.
- Ringing up purchases on cash registers and gathering required signatures; organizing and filing hard copy prescriptions and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) forms.
- Maintain inventory by placing daily orders, checking in received medications, and stocking shelves. Checking inventory for expired products and sending outdated medications to proper processors.
Other Duties
- Perform housekeeping duties, including maintaining proper sanitation in the department.
- Deliver medications to patients and care facilities when necessary.
- Prepare necessary manual third party billing and verifying remittances and payments.
- Work with bookkeeping to maintain accurate charge accounts and assist in managing monthly statements to pharmacy charge account customers.
- Work with the GM/HBC department to maintain OTC stock and merchandise.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license, transportation and proof of vehicle insurance.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Must be registered as a pharmacy technician with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy.
- Must hold national technician certification (or be in the process of acquiring certification) or be grandfathered per MN Board of Pharmacy requirements.
- Must possess a valid MN Driver's License.
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must be able to speak, read and write the English language. Must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Must have excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities to ensure the Mackenthun's exceptional experience for our customers and your coworkers.
- Must have basic math skills.
- Must have tact, professionalism, and exemplary customer service skills.

Furthermore, information will only be released internally on a need-to-know basis. All employees will not discuss patient cases outside the office or with anyone not employed by this company unless they are directly involved with the patient's case.
Physical Demands
- Constant standing, reaching, hearing, using hands.
- Occasional bending at the waist, lifting, driving and answering phones.
- Occasional lifting, up to 25 lbs.
Training
Training provided in all areas of responsibility including computer system, cash register, state requirements, pharmacy laws, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and Medicare requirements as well as personal safety and harassment prevention.
Equipment Used
Computer, phone, cash register, electronic payment system, printers, fax machine, prescription heat sealer.
Work Environment
Indoors, fast-paced, multifaceted environment, occasional exposure to compounding chemicals and cleaning chemicals. May be exposed to weather conditions if making deliveries.
