Job Summary
The Substation Project Manager is responsible for initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and evaluating substation construction projects in accordance with scope, budget, and schedule requirements. This role involves managing design-build and EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects, overseeing estimating, subcontractor coordination, procurement, and client relations, and ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
The Project Manager serves as the primary point of contact for project stakeholders and reports directly to the Division Manager of Substation Operations.
Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution
- Oversee projects from proposal stage through initiation, execution, and closeout.
- Manage day-to-day construction activities, including budgeting, scheduling, and progress tracking.
- Develop and implement project work plans, defining scope, objectives, and evaluation criteria.
- Prepare project construction schedules in Microsoft Project and/or Primavera.
- Monitor project performance to ensure timely procurement of materials, equipment, and labor.
- Attend weekly meetings to discuss manpower and equipment needs.
- Manage contract execution, change orders, and risk assessment.
- Any other duties as assigned by Management.
Estimating & Procurement
- Prepare cost estimates (labor and material) for substation and transmission projects.
- Conduct field take-offs/evaluations for estimate preparation.
- Prepare bills of material and manage purchasing for required project components.
- Oversee submittals, RFIs, drawings, and material approvals.
- Solicit, evaluate, and select subcontractors based on project needs.
- Participate in estimate review processes with internal and external stakeholders.
Stakeholder Coordination & Reporting
- Serve as the primary point-of-contact for project personnel, clients, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Coordinate project deliverables, meetings, schedule updates, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare and submit weekly/monthly progress reports, billing information, and cash flow projections.
- Provide regular updates to senior management on project performance and financials.
- Attend site visits, field walk-downs, and client meetings as needed.
Safety, Quality, & Compliance
- Demonstrate a commitment to the company’s safety program through personal actions and monitoring project activities.
- Ensure substation craft labor adheres to safety and quality standards.
- Manage project closeout and warranty processes.
- Enforce compliance with company policies, industry standards, and ethical guidelines.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- 5 years of project management experience in the electrical utility industry.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience managing substation EPC or design-build projects preferred.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Proficiency in the estimating process, through a software or Excel.
- Knowledgeable in substation specifications, proposals, and documentation for time/cost/labor estimates.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, structural, and electrical plans and specifications.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Experience with Microsoft Project and/or Primavera for scheduling.
- Familiarity with OSHA, NEC, NFPA 70E, and other relevant safety and construction regulations.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $130,000.00 per year
