What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Production Editor / Assistant to the Executive Managing Editor, FSG position at Macmillan Publishers?
Dual position, reporting to the executive managing editor. As associate production editor, will work on paperback conversions, reprints, and 4–5 new titles per season under the executive managing editor’s supervision. As assistant, duties include data entry and verification, processing invoices, routing material between departments, processing CIP and copyright applications, and other administrative duties. Will gain an overview of the publishing process by interacting with numerous departments, and will be trained in all aspects of production editorial work.
What you'll do:
- Serve as associate production editor on 4–5 new titles per season, plus paperback conversions and reprints
- Hire and supervise freelance copy editors, proofreaders, and indexers
- Prepare manuscripts for design and typesetting; collate author and proofreader corrections; check that corrections have been made correctly
- Copyedit and proofread indexes, jackets, press releases, catalog copy, and other material
- Update and send out the weekly production schedule and due-dates memo
- Attend weekly production meeting
- Process all reprint corrections and freelancer invoices
- Data entry in databases and spreadsheets, including initial set-up of new titles
- Process CIP applications and Notice for Copyright forms for all titles
- Digitally route material between departments
What you'll bring:
- Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills
- Strong knowledge of grammar and punctuation, including familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
- Meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, and strong follow-through
- Highly organized and able to meet deadlines while juggling multiple projects
- Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Track Changes and digital markup of PDFs
- Desire to be a production editor (who makes sure everything is correct in the book) as opposed to an editor (who acquires and edits the book)
Ideal Experience/Education:
- Must have prior copyediting and proofreading experience
- Bachelor’s degree
