The Recycling Operator/Custodian is responsible for operating recycling equipment, maintaining a clean and safe facility, and assisting the Buildings & Grounds department with basic repairs. This role involves sorting and processing recyclable materials, performing janitorial duties, and supporting building maintenance functions. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and capable of working independently while contributing to a team environment.
Essential Functions
- Operate recycling equipment such as balers and other machinery to process materials.
- Maintain the recycling center in a clean, safe, and well-organized manner to prevent hazards.
- Load and unload materials using a forklift.
- Sort and transport materials into appropriate containers per recycling program guidelines.
- Maintain and log recycling and janitorial reports.
- Transport recycling containers, boxes, bins, and product to and from work areas while meeting daily processing goals.
- Perform daily janitorial duties, including sweeping, mopping, trash removal, and sanitizing workspaces.
- Conduct minor facility repairs, such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, and basic plumbing fixes.
- Maintain floors and carpets through routine cleaning and care.
- Assist with snow shoveling and general grounds keeping as needed.
- Assist in loading or unloading trucks and moving furniture.
- Support the companys quality improvement efforts by adhering to ISO standards and participating in continuous improvement initiatives.
- Assist the building maintenance department with additional projects as required.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies, including the proper handling of cleaning chemicals and waste disposal.
- Maintain and operate grounds keeping tools and equipment, such as lawnmowers and trimmers.
- Respond to facility maintenance requests as needed.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 6 months of forklift operation experience required.
- Previous experience in a manufacturing environment preferred.
- Prior experience in facilities repair work is preferred.
- Experience operating recycling equipment is a plus.
- Knowledge of food processing/packaging and/or flexible packaging is beneficial.
- Experience with ISO standards preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve issues independently.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, including reading and interpreting simple diagrams.
- Proficiency in operating cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers and carpet care machines.
- Knowledge of proper use and handling of general cleaning chemicals.
- Ability to safely operate lawn and grounds care tools and equipment.
- High degree of attention and care when performing tasks.
- Ability to climb ladders and work in overhead structures or confined spaces.
- Regularly lift, bend, reach, twist, and turn.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Prolonged periods of standing and extensive walking throughout the facility.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Good hand-eye coordination with arm, hand, and finger dexterity.
- Exposure to oils, solvents, and cleaning chemicals.
- Possible exposure to dirt, dust, and odors from cleaning solutions.
- Manufacturing environment with a high noise level.
- Exposure to varying temperatures, including outdoor weather conditions.
- Regular interaction with moving machinery and airborne paper particles.
