Job Function
Macomb Community College teaching faculty demonstrate deep subject matter knowledge and provide effective instruction to students using various modalities including, but not limited to, on campus, online, remote, hybrid, and flexible learning. They develop, modify, and ensure currency of curriculum and course syllabi. Faculty are responsive to their students and support their success through timely communication and feedback, assessment of student learning, regular office hours, etc. They are active members of the college community and attend department meetings as required
.Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities: This dual role position focuses on student success as faculty teaching Respiratory therapy subject matter in the Respiratory therapy program. Additionally, as Director of Clinical Education (DCE) this individual must provide effective leadership in developing, conducting, and ongoing assessment of the clinical education program. Specific responsibilities for Faculty and DCE are as follows:
Faculty responsibilities:
- Teach subject content
- Continually evaluate and refine course content for revisions of current evidence-based practices, and scope of practice guidelines
- Develop course assessments that will accurately measure achievement of student learning outcomes and participate in assessment of student learning
- Collaborate with respiratory therapy faculty/Program Director in areas of teaching, curriculum development and revision
- Identify teaching and lab materials for assigned courses
- Identify at-risk students and implement success resources to maximize student retention and progression
- Creatively plan and implement remediation strategies for student success
- Develop and implement simulation into learning curriculum and remediation
- Develop and maintain course materials in the College’s Learning Management System (LMS), including, but not limited to, announcements, syllabus, and gradebook.
- Keep gradebook up to date and submit final grades by published deadlines.
- Hold office hours per collective bargaining agreement and needs of the department.
- Actively participate in area and college committees and perform related duties and activities necessary to conduct the work of the area.
- Perform periodic program reviews and maintain assessment records as required by college for Higher learning Commission (HLC) under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Health and Human Services and collaboratively with the Respiratory therapy program staff.
- Collaborate with Respiratory therapy (PD) in maintenance of Respiratory therapy program Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) under the supervision of the Associate Dean of Health and Human Services
- Serve as resource and mentor for all faculty; full time, and adjunct/part time
- Evaluate adjunct faculty in collaboration with RT PD and Associate Dean of Health and Human Services
- Responsible for collaborating with Respiratory Therapy PD and Associate Dean of Health and Human Services on community engagement activities
- Other duties as assigned in compliance with the MCCFO collective bargaining agreement.
DCE responsibility guidelines per Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC):
- Organization, development and administration of the clinical curriculum
- Planning for, acquisition of, and communication with, locations needed for development of evolving practice skills
- Ensuring that appropriate supervision/assessment of students is available at all clinical sites
- Ongoing assessment of the overall effectiveness of the clinical training for all students
- Work with the PD to ensure that student clinical exposures are coordinated with their didactic and laboratory education
- Assist in identifying and facilitating student clinical experiences
- Oversight of clinical education contractual agreements
- Frequent, regular, personal, and consistent contact with students, clinical faculty/preceptors, and clinical affiliates in all program locations
- Manage data of student performance at clinical sites, student assessments of clinical sites and preceptors, information from clinical sites regarding student behavior
- Maintain current knowledge of health care changes affecting clinical practice and education
- Provision of dates for each clinical education experience
- Program requests from clinical education site regarding the number and type of available student clinical placements
- Ensure that all clinical preceptors and students are in compliance with the site-specific requirements for the site to which they are assigned
- Provide program and clinical specific training to clinical preceptors and students
- Maintain proper training/assessment of preceptors and revise as needed per program changes or clinical evaluations
EducationMinimum of Baccalaureate degree in Respiratory Therapy or related field from institution accredited by an institutional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).Experience and QualificationsExperiential Background:
- Current registration as respiratory therapist with at least 4 years’ experience in respiratory care of which 2 years has been spent in teaching in an accredited respiratory care program.
- Knowledge of the respiratory therapist accreditation process, CoARC
- At least 2 years of experience teaching Respiratory therapy courses is preferred
Licensure/Compliance:
- Documentation of valid Registered Respiratory Therapy (RRT) license through State of Michigan
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of and demonstrated ability of teaching in various modalities such as on campus, online, remote, hybrid, and flexible learning.
A comprehensive, current knowledge of Respiratory therapy foundation for effective teaching and learning must be demonstrated. Comprehensive, current knowledge should be demonstrated by participation in professional development, recognition, certification, and research.
Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to assess learning outcomes per program and accreditation guidelines.
Knowledge of computer supported, assisted or based instruction and the demonstrated ability to integrate into instructional practice.
Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to design or revise curricula to maintain relevancy and meet changing needs.
Current knowledge of Respiratory therapy education provides foundation for effective teaching and learning. A commitment to learn and use a variety of pedagogical tools to enhance the learning of students with varying backgrounds and learning styles.
Knowledge of the concepts and practices of academic governance, including employee involvement and individual accountability.
Must possess the academic and experiential qualifications and backgrounds (identified in documented descriptions of roles and responsibilities) that are necessary to meet program objectives and the mission of the institution.
Demonstrated skills or experiences which verify professional teaching and communication ability.
Knowledge of, or commitment to learn and use concepts and practices promoting effective teaching and learning.
Responsible for the management and administration of the program, including planning, evaluation, budgeting, selection of faculty and staff, maintenance of accreditation, and commitment to strategies for professional development.
Administrative experience including, but not limited to, program planning and implementation, personnel management, evaluation, and budgeting.
(This standard may be waived at the time of hire, but the newly hired teacher will be required to prepare a plan with his/her supervisor that will ensure the achievement of the standard by the end of the probationary period.)Working Hours and/or Working ConditionsWORKING CONDITIONS:Courses include on campus, online, remote, hybrid, and/or flexible learning.
