What are the responsibilities and job description for the Crew Leader - Public Works position at Macon-Bibb County Government?
Under general direction, performs routine work overseeing and participating in semi-skilled and unskilled maintenance and construction tasks. This position requires performing work as a member of the crew, but acting in a capacity of lead worker by providing on-site direction of crews, as needed. Performance is reviewed through reports, conferences and observation of results achieved.
- Oversees and participates in the work of crews engaged in construction, maintenance and repair of departmental facilities, equipment and grounds.
- Assists in scheduling, assigning duties of work crews and monitoring employee attendance.
- Keeps record of employee's attendance.
- Transports materials and crews to and from job sites, as required.
- Assists in training employees on work methods, equipment operation and safety precautions.
- Checks condition of tools and equipment and issues to assigned crew members
- Keeps inventory of supplies utilized and advises supervisor when new supplies are needed.
- Inspects work of crews to insure proper completion of tasks.
- Reports discipline related work problems to immediate supervisor.
Completes special projects and performs other miscellaneous duties as required.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Construction and maintenance equipment and other assigned equipment.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
This position reports to a designated supervisor within Public Works.
The Crew Leader should possess, at a minimum:
- A high school diploma or GED; four (4) years of experience in maintenance and construction activities
- Supervisory or crew leader experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred, not required.
- Knowledge of concrete repair and restoration is preferred, not required.
- Must be willing and able to accept after duty work hours on an "On Call" status as required.
- Must pass a vision test for night driving.
- Must be available for any duties required after normal working hours.
- Considerable knowledge of general repair, maintenance, materials, equipment, construction activities, and methods and procedures used in such activities.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, hazards, and safety precautions of construction and maintenance-related work.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions as well as communicate verbally and in writing.
- Ability to plan, assign, and oversee the work of crews engaged in maintenance activities.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and with members of the general public.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and understand written materials. Ability to effectively communicate information to supervisors, employees, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing in a professional manner in order to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and/or provide service. In addition, this position requires extensive contact with supervisors, other employees, and the general public.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to interpret and understand a variety of forms, reports, manuals, regulations, and other means of instruction and guidance.
