The Systems Administrator is responsible for the installation, administration and oversight of Macon-Bibb County’s multi-server environment including but not limited to cloud-based implementations.   The System Administrator will be instrumental in driving and adhering to the tactical plans set forth, ensuring a resilient infrastructure, and upholding confidentiality, integrity, and availability across the organization.

The following duties are representative of the work required for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned: 


  • Administers, manages, and audits resources including the datacenter, storage systems, email platform, backup solutions, client-side and server-side software, hardware, and IAM resources
  • Perform system administration functions including OS configurations, software, endpoint protection, patching, and other security tasks
  • Conduct regular system monitoring, performance optimization, and assessment to proactively identify and address potential issues
  • Perform eDiscovery tasks based on legal requirements and counsel advisement
  • Perform and oversee system and software related implementations, including cloud-based resources
  • Assists in administration of system security, data integrity, and availability throughout the infrastructure
  • Participates in disaster recovery and continuity planning, testing, and execution
  • Research and analyze methods of addressing infrastructure needs to increase end-user productivity, system optimization, and network stability
  • Interacts with leadership, department directors, and end users to gain feedback and direction to meet technical business requirements
  • Collaborate with other cross-functional team members to support maintenance of network security to reduce all risks to an acceptable level
  • Creates and maintains technical documentation and standard operating procedures
  • Attends scheduled and unscheduled planning and production meetings
  • Engage and communicate with vendors, consultants, and stakeholders to ensure technical business requirements are met based on department requirements
  • Participate in projects related to department and county-wide initiatives
  • Provide recommendations for infrastructure improvements and innovation
  • Comply and enforce established policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines
  • Ensures that all technical modifications are completely documented and accurately logged within the ITSM
  • Attends scheduled and unscheduled planning and production meetings.

The Systems Administrator should possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in computer science, bachelor’s degree in information technology, or equivalent field, and at least 4 years of progressive system and network experience; an Associate’s degree in similar course work and 6 years or progressive system and network experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the position.

The Systems Administrator must be knowledgeable of the following principles, procedures, and concepts:


  • Knowledge of system and network fundamentals and advanced complex concepts
  • Knowledge of system and network auditing and logging
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting, testing, and monitoring concepts
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of research, statistical analysis, and report preparation and generating
  • Knowledge of system and network cascading effects
  • Knowledge of office automation and business software
  • Skill building professional relationships
  • Skill in effective time management
  • Skill concerning professionalism and courteousness
  • Skill in enterprise security, ensure data integrity, and data back-ups.
  • Ability to focus on achieving goals, including those involving external departments, agencies, and the public
  • Ability to effectively communicate and follow verbally and in writing
  • Ability to multi-task in a high activity/energy professional environment that includes multiple and concurrent projects, deadlines, occasional interruptions, and walk-in appointments
  • Ability to resolve problems in a timely, efficient, and effective manner
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and organize work; set priorities and meet critical deadlines
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instruction
  • Ability to research, comprehend, and apply technical information when applicable

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.


SUPERVISORY CONTROL AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

None.


TRAVEL:

The Systems Administrator is required to travel minimally but may be required to do so on occasion.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: 

Ability to read and understand written materials.  Ability to effectively communicate information to supervisors, employees, and the general public. 


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: 

Ability to work with basic mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. 


COMMUNICATION SKILLS: 

Must be able to effectively communicate orally and in written form in a professional manner in order to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and/or provide service. In addition, this position requires extensive contact with other employees and the general public, often involving problem-solving circumstances.


REASONING ABILITY: 

Ability to interpret and understand a variety of forms, reports, manuals, regulations, and other means of instruction and guidance.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires light demands with intermittent sitting, standing, walking, computer use, and occasional lifting of lightweight objects.
