Position summary: Primarily responsible for coding and abstracting diagnoses and procedures according to coding guidelines. Checking records for accuracy and completeness.
General purpose: To assign ICD10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for each patient’s medical record.
Role qualifications:
Education:
*High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited school for medical record technicians preferred.
Experience:
*Hospital coding experience preferred.
Licenses/Certificate:
*Not required
Position responsibilities:
* Reviews medical records and reports in order to assign correct codes.
* Abstracts coding information into the computer.
* Checks records for accuracy and completeness.
* Follows specified procedures for copying and fulfilling medical record requests.
* Provides customer service.
* Must follow correct coding guidelines as established by the International Classification of Diseases and Operations and the American Medical Association’s Current Procedural Terminology, American Health Information Management Association Standards of Ethical Coding
* Must follow HIPAA, Department of Health guidelines and Policy and Procedures as established by the hospital.
