Macy's, Inc is building an Enterprise Data & Analytics team to further grow our capabilities in support of our mission to be a data - led, customer centric company. This team will focus on accelerating impact from analytics, coordinating an enterprise-wide roadmap, and ensuring proper data governance and management. As a leader on this team, the VP, Enterprise Data Science will help lead the charge to execute on our vision to build profitable lifetime customer relationships by embedding data & analytics at the heart of everything we do.

Job Overview

The VP, Enterprise Data Science is responsible for setting and owning the enterprise strategy of data science and machine learning, building best-in-class data science teams, modernizing data science and machine learning technology and platform, leading data science chapter across Macys Inc. to effectively execute on priority use cases. The VP will drive analytics and algorithm integration and development for use cases and establish norms, standards and a data-driven culture throughout the organization. The VP will lead and build a team of Data Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers who will set the standard across the organization and partner closely with business units to support execution and productionizing solutions. The VP will report to the SVP of Enterprise Data & Analytics, who leads Enterprise Data & Analytics to accelerate digital transformation and value delivery from data and analytics, and coordinate efforts across the enterprise.

Essential Functions

Data Science and Machine Learning :

Set enterprise roadmap and deploy best-in-class advanced analytics and ensure scalability and reusability of codebase and models while establishing standardized enterprise methodologies.
Define and enforce data science and machine learning standards, including guidelines for tailoring analytics methodologies to specific use case needs (e.g., ML, AI, descriptive analytics).
Lead data science chapter across all business and technology teams and align data science strategies to business priorities.
Advance machine learning capabilities at Macys Inc to empower business decisions with speed and scale, through streamline, production, and automation.
Partner with business stakeholders to optimize the design of end-to-end data science & machine learning solutions to drive user adoption, change management, and accelerate analytics value delivery
Institute quality control and ethical guidelines for algorithms, code, and outputs.
Drive innovation, technical excellency, and work with product management and engineering to identify and implement data tools to ensure efficient and seamless execution of analytics.

Culture :

Create and foster community of practice for data science and machine learning.

Be entrepreneurial, agile, and results oriented. Drive innovation and change management to create an understanding of potential applications of advanced analytics and data science.

Increase agility in identifying data issues and taking action to remediate.

Encourage user adoption of analytical tools and methods and embrace data in strategic business decisions.

Create awareness, knowledge and conviction around data-driven practices and behaviors, increasing digital IQ of organization.

Leadership :

Strategic leader with a passion for data science and machine learning who can build a team with capability to drive business impact.

Lead the enterprise agenda for data science and machine learning and drive alignment with senior leadership team.

Partner closely with Technology and Business Units to drive adoption, as well as provide direct analytical support where needed.

Balance both leading a team and engaging directly with the work needed to accomplish the priority use cases.

Lead talent strategy across data science chapter. Create and foster career development and growth paths for team members in alignment with company and personal objectives.

Provide guidance on recruitment and career pathing for data science chapter. Promote Macys data science and machine learning teams and work with external data science community.

Coach direct reports as they build strategies and roadmaps.

Assist direct reports with ongoing prioritization and resource allocation to ensure that the crucial business initiatives are delivered.

Demonstrate Macys leadership commitments of promoting diversity and inclusion, encouraging growth, creating connection and driving performance.

Key Performance Indicators :

Integration, development, and deployment of algorithms and methodologies for analytics use cases.

Adoption of coding and methodology best practices across the enterprise.

Additional metrics dependent upon prioritized use cases supported (e.g., lift, customer acquisition, retention, etc.).

Annualized value to business vs. expense

Qualifications and Competencies

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required

Data scientist with over 15 years of experience in the field.

10 years of leading & managing a large team of data scientists focused on enterprise solutions.

Experience in retail or consumer industry is strongly preferred

Demonstrated track record of developing, articulating, and driving a strategy of where and how data science and machine learning can create value and improve business performance, with proven results.

Data science expert with experience in delivering data science initiatives, accelerating analytics-driven outcomes, and transforming data into business value in the retail / consumer context.

Fluent in complex algorithms and analytics methodologies across multiple platforms and languages.

Analytics expert with experience in delivering robust analytics use cases across business units with experience in cross-functional collaboration.

Community builder who can foster a data and analytics culture and support data-driven thinking and discussions.

Customer-centric and experienced with successful cross-functional collaboration.

Competencies

Ability to effectively share technical information, communicate technical issues and solutions to all levels of business

Able to juggle multiple projects - can identify primary and secondary objectives, prioritize time and communicate timeline to team members

Ability and desire to take product / project ownership

Ability to work a flexible schedule based on department and Company needs

Communication :

Strong executive presence with ability to communicate complex messages and trade-offs and tell a compelling story; Demonstrable presentation, written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Strong leadership skills ability to lead people and teams including giving strength-based feedback, OKR based individual development, Hands-on coaching to help the team solve complex problems.
