The Madeira School is seeking a Director of Chamber Orchestra (part-time/50%) to join its faculty for the 2025-2026 school year. The successful candidate will support and achieve the School’s mission and vision by effectively facilitating learning in student-centered college preparatory classrooms.
Founded in 1906, the Madeira School is an independent, college preparatory, boarding and day school for girls grades 9-12. Located in McLean, Virginia on a 376-acre wooded campus, Madeira is 12 miles from the center of Washington, DC. Madeira’s ambitious academic curriculum emphasizes both content and skills in the context of a college-prep liberal arts education.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct full orchestra rehearsals and combined orchestra/vocal ensembles in a weekly evening class setting. Capable of instructing strings, woodwind, brass, percussion and piano students. Piano competency a plus.
- Embrace teaching beginning as well as advanced level students.
- Assemble and coach chamber ensembles of varying sizes and skill levels.
- Collaborate with Vocal, Theater, and Dance ensembles for special pieces. Instruct and support instrumental soloists for special performances with other arts disciplines.
- Arrange and transcribe music for different instruments to support ensembles.
- Create opportunities for performances which reflect diversity in musical styles, periods, genres, and compositional backgrounds.
- Manage maintenance and accessory inventory for school owned instruments, assisting students with instrumental maintenance issues with local repair specialists.
- Create and assess appropriate homework assignments to support personal practice between ensemble rehearsals.
- Support a student-centered project-based learning environment for musicians.
- Collaborate with Private Instructors for special performances and rehearsals. Assist with running 4 Soiree Recitals during the school year.
- Manage a part-time (50%) load to include: evening teaching, attending day-time department meetings, and overseeing the Chamber Orchestra program
- Plan and prepare innovative and rigorous instructional content
- Work collaboratively with a team of faculty, colleagues, administrators and parents
- Maintain accurate student records such as grades and comments and communicate such data in accordance with the Academic Calendar and School expectations
- Know how girls learn and use this knowledge to guide instructional and curricular decisions; apply principles of mind, brain and education science when teaching, developing curriculum, and assessing student learning
- Support and act in accordance with the school’s mission and values
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred (degrees in related subject matter preferred)
- Ability to demonstrate growth mindset, optimism, and belief that all students can learn required

- Ability to make contribution to the School outside one’s academic department, including to activities program, residential program, and interdisciplinary offerings
