TEACHER : ELEMENTARY / MIDDLE SCHOOL MUSIC

Overall Responsibilities

The job of Elementary / Middle School Music Teacher - MUSD is to plan and carry out an effective music education program that will maximize learning for all students and contribute to their development into confident, competent and creative learners.

Specific Responsibilities

  • 1. Plan, communicate and carry out effective instruction to maximize learning for all students based on the California Standards for Music and the Teaching Profession.
  • 2. Engage and support all students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students' diverse needs, and by engaging students in problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • 3. Monitor student achievement and adjust instructions in response to student data.
  • 4. Maintain and organize the repair, servicing and replacement of instruments and equipment.
  • 5. Organize student concerts.
  • 6. Implement policies, procedures, and mandates as required.
  • 7. Prepare and submit requested reports and plans in an accurate and timely manner.
  • 8. Participate in professional development and pursue opportunities to grow professionally.
  • 9. Participate in school, District, and department activities and meetings.
  • 10. Work with other staff, including administration, counseling, clerical, and other teachers.
  • 11. Work with parents and community members to provide for the instructional needs of music students.
  • 12. Foster positive relationships between students, staff, and community members.
  • 13. Facilitate the social and emotional growth of students by supporting a positive musical experience, while developing and encouraging lifelong participation in music.
  • 14. Perform all other obligations mandated by laws or Board policy, and other reasonable and appropriate tasks assigned by the Administration.

Qualifications

Specific knowledge of :

  • 1. California Music Standards and other relevant professional standards.
  • 2. Principles of learning, instruction, and assessment appropriate to music development.
  • 3. Community support organizations and public relations
  • 4. Instruments and equipment used in music classes.
  • 5. Pertinent laws, codes policies, and / or regulations
  • 6. Overseeing financial transactions
  • Specific Ability to :

  • 1. Schedule activities, meetings, and / or events.
  • 2. Use basic, job-related equipment.
  • 3. Independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • 4. Work with data utilizing defined but different processes.
  • 5. Work with a diversity of individuals and / or groups.

  • 7. Solve problems independently to analyze issue(s) and create action plan(s).
  • 8. Communicating with persons of varied educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • 9. Dealing with frequent interruptions.

  • 11. Meeting deadlines and schedules.
  • 12. Motivating students.
  • 13. Providing a firm, fair, and consistent discipline approach.
  • 14. Providing leadership, direction, and team building.
  • 15. Traveling to off campus events and competitions.
  • 16. Working extended hours that may include evenings and / or weekends.
  • Education :

  • 1. Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
  • 2. Graduate level course work in education.
  • Experience :

  • 1. Completion of student teaching.
  • License :

  • 1. Valid California Teaching Credential for Music.
  • 2. Valid Driver's License.
  • Employment Information

    Physical Demands of the Work Environment

    These physical characteristics are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job safely.

  • 1. Mobility sufficient to move about, stand, and / or sit for extended periods, and access all locations in the work environment.
  • 2. Manual skill to appropriately control and manipulate objects, tools, materials, and equipment used on the job, including a telephone and a computer.
  • 3. Flexibility and strength to reach with hands and arms, bend and stoop.
  • 4. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone.
  • 5. Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations and on the telephone.
  • 6. Ability to see, read and distinguish colors, with or without vision aids : computer screen, equipment used in the work environment, instructional materials, training materials, directions, rules, policies, calendars, agendas, manuals, and other printed matter.
  • 7. Physical strength and agility to push, pull, twist, turn, squat, lift, and carry bulky objects of up to 80 pounds with or without assistance.
  • 8. Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in a safe, accurate, neat, and timely fashion and to make and evaluate the results of judgments and decisions.
  • 9. Ability to drive all district vehicles.
  • 10. High tolerance for continuing stressful situations.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions in the work environment. This environment may be expected to include : moderate noise level that is occasionally very noisy, frequent interruptions, and occasional movement from inside to outside with exposure to elements, stairs, children, and duty hours before sunrise or after sunset.
