What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Laborer position at Madison, City of (WI)?
Public Works Laborers perform routine manual work related to varied public works maintenance activities within the Engineering Division. Work includes laboring tasks related to the cleaning, maintenance, CCTV inspection, and repair of the City's storm and sanitary sewer systems, buildings, and grounds. Work is performed independently or as part of a team and is directed and reviewed by a crew leader or designated supervisor for conformance with established procedures and/or objectives.
These positions are not part of an established career ladder.
Hours of work: These positions are regularly scheduled for 40 hours per week. Regular work hours are 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

- Use required personal protective equipment (i.e., steel-toed shoes, high-visibility clothing, hard hat, eye and hearing protection, etc.) for the job being performed.
- Install and maintain traffic control to provide a safe work zone and facilitate the ability of pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists to safely and easily move through the work zone.
- Perform heavy manual labor associated with sewer cleaning, maintenance, CCTV inspection, trenchless repairs, and structure repairs.
- Remove and replace sanitary and storm access covers.
- Check and monitor for potential hazardous atmospheres in structures.
- Assist with set-up of cleaning and inspection equipment. Communicate location of equipment in line to Tech 1 or Tech 2.
- Assist with set-up of sampling and flow monitoring equipment. Operate jackhammers, compactors, pumps, generators, mowers, chainsaws, etc.
- Operate non-CDL motor vehicles to transport materials to job and disposal sites.
- Operate other related tools and equipment as required.
- Perform routine asphalt patching and concrete flatwork.
- Clean inlets, grates, greenways.
- Perform landscape maintenance activities such as mowing, string trimming, etc.
- Perform tree and brush removal.
- Perform terrace restoration.
- Perform snow and ice removal.
- Perform routine building maintenance and cleaning tasks.
- Wash, clean, fuel and assist in performance of required maintenance of vehicles, equipment and tools.
- Record daily work and inspection observations.
- Prepare and submit accident, incident, and vehicle problem reports.
- Maintain facilities, grounds, vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Install, maintain, and remove sewer sampling and flow monitoring equipment.
- Assist property owners in resolving sewer-related problems.
- Work cooperatively with other agencies (i.e., Police and Fire departments; Fleet, Parks, Streets, and Traffic Engineering divisions; and Water Utility) and external customers (Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District, Dane County Landfill, Town of Madison, Air National Guard, etc.)
- Perform other related work as assigned.

- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Employees must maintain an acceptance rate of at least 50% for emergency call-ins. Failure to do so may result in discipline up to and including termination of employment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to enter and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to frequently bend, twist, squat, climb, and reach for extended periods of time.
- This position requires a high percentage of work outdoors in all types of weather.
