What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parks Equipment Mechanic 2 position at Madison, City of (WI)?
This is advanced-level skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of Parks fleet equipment (e.g., tractors, mowers, rollers, blowers, sweepers, etc.). Work at this level is characterized by a high degree of independence in the operation of the central repair facility, maintenance of a parts inventory system, and to coordinate responsibilities relative to the Parks fleet repair program (primarily relative to the assessment of equipment for purchase and in the area of warranty administration). The work involves overseeing and being responsible for equipment repair at multiple sites and providing leadership and/or consultation to lower-level equipment mechanics, maintenance and repair workers and operators as needed. Work performed is under the limited supervision of a Parks General Supervisor or foreperson and is evaluated periodically for compliance with maintenance objectives and safety regulations. This is the advanced level of the Equipment Mechanic 1 career progression series. Work is performed with greater independence, discretion, technical and technological proficiency.

Inspect, repair, and maintain Parks fleet equipment, to include tractor units with diesel and gas engines, hydro static transmissions, steering linkages and power steering units, and automotive type electrical systems with electrical safety switch lockouts.
Inspect, repair and overhaul small engine equipment such as push mowers, string trimmers, pumps, generators, compactors, rollers, sod cutters and snow blowers; tractor mounted mower decks; self propelled park sweeping equipment; and tractor mounted snow blowers or brooms. Replace bearings, wheels, shields and sharpen blades. Perform seasonal changeover of Parks equipment. Overhaul park equipment.
Identify and order necessary parts. Maintain parts and service manuals. Prepare periodic inventory of needed parts. Maintain stock, sort and label all parts and bins. Distribute parts to field maintenance personnel and keep records of distribution. Supply parts to service contractors as appropriate.
Maintain preventative maintenance records. Provide equipment maintenance expertise to supervisory personnel on a wide variety of issues to include the need for equipment replacement and safety concerns. Oversee periodic maintenance by operators. Provide leadership to lower-level staff and assigned helpers as required. Provide instruction to operators on maintenance procedures. Perform preventive maintenance on all Parks fleet equipment.
Evaluate Parks fleet equipment for purchases, and advise management on purchase considerations. Maintain contacts with vendors and coordinate warranty administration matters.
Oversee and be responsible for equipment repair at various Parks operations. Provide leadership, consultation and guidance to skilled maintenance personnel and unskilled operators on unusual problems as may be required.
Determine the need for specialized contract repair services, make referrals on contract repair services, and maintain warranty records and contacts with dealers.
Assist with winter and summer park maintenance operations as needed.
Perform related work as required.
- Three (3) years of skilled experience in the maintenance and repair of a variety of specialized gas and diesel equipment used in grounds maintenance work (e.g., mowers, blowers, sweepers, etc.); including (1) one year in a leadership capacity.
- Completion of vocational coursework in small engine repair.

Four (4) years of work experience applying the following:
- Principles and practices of mechanical repair and maintenance applicable to Parks fleet equipment (to include gas, diesel and small engine repair).
- Specialized Parks equipment to include mowers, blowers, pumps, sweepers, etc.
- Electrical and hydraulic maintenance and repair principles relative to Parks equipment; AND
Two (2) years experience in applying the following:
- Computer use and software applicable to the duties of the position.

Possession of a valid Class A Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License. The successful candidate must have passed the written portion of the relevant Department of Transportation testing process before starting employment. A condition of continued employment is passage of the skills portion of the test and obtaining the required operator’s license within a specified timeframe. Specific endorsement requirements will be determined on a position by position basis.
Must maintain a minimum acceptance rate of 50% or better on all winter season snow, ice and or event support overtime offered and 50% on all summer season turf, event and or other maintenance support offered overtime.
