Library Director – Madison County Public Library
Principal Responsibilities
General Library Operations
- Follow procedures and practices established by county and regional board, with emphasis on privacy, confidentiality, and freedom of information policies
- Develop and follow procedures for opening/closing the library
- Be responsible for the day-to-day care and maintenance of the library building and equipment
- Check materials in and out; issue library cards; keep status of circulation; check on overdue materials and notify patrons of overdue materials
- Supervise and train library staff and volunteers
- Coordinate materials delivery schedule with Carroll and Madison Library System (CAMALS)
Administrative and Bookkeeping
- Be responsible for funds collected through the library, under the supervision and direction of the county library board and the county clerk’s office
- Track all expenses, via a ledger, to keep within corresponding budgeted line items
- Maintain accurate accounting practices for cash receipts: fax, lost items, etc.
- Order books and materials, check invoices on arrivals
- Send bills and invoices to county clerk’s office
- Maintain accurate time sheets and submit as required by county clerk
- Maintain monthly statistic sheets (circulation, computer hours, programs, new patrons, etc.) and submit as required by CAMALS
Patron Services
- Create a welcoming environment for library patrons
- Actively seek ideas and information from patrons on how to better serve community and library needs
- Assist patrons in the use of library facilities and computer, internet, and digital services
- Do reference and reader advisory work
- Assist patrons in finding books, DVDs, and other materials from other libraries
- Manage holds and ILL requests for patrons
Collection Development
- Know your community
- Ensure that library collections and acquisitions satisfy public demand in various media; provide and maintain a balanced, relevant collection of fiction, non-fiction, periodicals, audio, video in adult, young adult, and juvenile categories
- Check donated books for possible addition to collection
- Weed books, periodicals, and other materials
- Keep shelves in good alphabetic and numeric order
- Maintain display of new materials
Program Development
- Plan, prepare, and direct programs, tours, story hours, book talks, class visits, film programs and clubs in cooperation with the county library board and local Friends of the Library organization
- Plan, prepare, and direct Summer Reading programs
- Actively seek ideas from the community to offer programs of local interest for various ages
Publicity
- Create and maintain a strong public relations program for the library
- Promote awareness of the library, its services, programs, and events through public relations techniques, including social media, with emphasis on news releases to local newspaper
- Prepare posters, displays, flyers, bookmarks and coordinate distribution
- Keep community information bulletin boards and displays up-to-date
- Assist the CAMALS office in updating and maintaining CAMALS Website information, on at least a monthly basis, regarding hours of operation, upcoming programs, events, Friends meetings, etc.
- Promote awareness of CAMALS Public Library Foundation
- Act as spokesperson for the library when called upon by public officials, local organizations, schools, etc.
Board and related responsibilities
- Attend county library board meetings, directors’ meetings, and workshops as required
- Follow all board policies
- Bring proposed changes to existing policies or new policies to the board for review
- Inform the board of the need for services, repairs, materials, etc.
- Prepare a written report for quarterly meetings of county library board
- Network with other CAMALS libraries and state library
- Coordinate with local Friends of the Library and volunteers to provide additional hours of operation as needed and to assist with programs
- Attend CAMALS meetings, local Friends meetings, and Foundation events when possible
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or equivalent necessary; Bachelor’s degree encouraged
- Registered library cardholder
- Familiarity with the public library laws of Arkansas
- Familiarity with Atriuum Integrated Library System Software
- Experience working in a library, public agency, or position with public contact
Special Skills
- Knowledge of standard library practices and routines
- Knowledge of reader interest levels and of current popular book titles and authors
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel programs and Internet research skills.
- Proficiency in writing skills, demonstrating care with spelling, grammar, punctuation, and proofreading
- Ability to deal tactfully, professionally, and effectively with library patrons of all ages and backgrounds
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $32,240.00 - $35,829.84 per year
