Position Overview
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Inspections. Assists in planning and performing inspections; interprets International Fire Code/International Building Code and other I-Codes in cases of conflict and disagreements. Inspect new and existing commercial, industrial, and institutional installations for hazardous materials, processes, equipment, and practices, completing appropriate inspection reports.
Prevention. Answers inquiries from the public regarding fire prevention and practices. Makes public appearances and gives safety lectures to schools and civic organizations.
Miscellaneous. Perform other duties as required.
Education and Experience
Education and Experience. Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalency required. College level courses in firefighting and fire prevention methods and techniques, experience as a Fire Chief , Fire Inspector, Fire Fighter or Volunteer Fire Fighter would be beneficial.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. Thorough knowledge of International Fire Code/International Building Code and other I-Codes, operations, laws; Thorough knowledge of the State fire code; Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and practices of fire investigations; Good knowledge of flammable liquids, gasses, and hazardous chemicals, their proper use, and storage requirements; Some knowledge of Electrical wiring systems and their capacities. Ability to interpret plans and specifications for compliance with fire prevention safety standards; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Building Inspection Department, Volunteer Fire
Other Requirements
Physical Requirements Must be able to communicate effectively. The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinet, office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer etc. Must be able to observe their surroundings. Must be physically able to climb, crawl, stoop, etc. to perform inspections. Must be able to ascend/descend a ladder, constantly positions self under houses, cab. nets, in attics, other tight spaces to perform inspections.
The person in this position frequently communicates with homeowners, builders, co-workers and general public. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Must be able to detect, observe, determine and assess of building structures are adequate per the Code. Must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions. Must be able to pass physical examination.
Special Requirements. A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for County’s insurance.
