Position Overview
Consists of technical work in creating and maintaining Geographic Information System Databases, producing digital map products and assisting in the development of GIS applications for the employing jurisdiction. Employees in this class are responsible for performing GIS database automation and maintenance functions using appropriate GIS software. Work is performed under the general supervision of a designated supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(All duties listed may not be included in any one position, nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)
- Develops and maintains GIS Databases; research geographic data conversion; gathers geographic data and other map information; performs field work for data collection of County infrastructure; assists general public with inquiries regarding County Rights of Way, floodplain identification, and jurisdiction
- Interprets planning, engineering, tax/property data and maps; produces accurate and legible maps using drafting and cartographic skills; creates spatial analysis products such as maps, reports or plots using GIS software; prepares cartographic products for presentation; codes digitizes and enters map feature information; performs quality control on attribute information to be tagged to digital map layers; matches address location-based data to geographic database; checks for label errors; verifies map feature accuracy, maintains geographic equipment.
- Special projects may include stormwater facility assessment and database development, asphalt inventory, water system asset management program development, and other similar projects.
Education and Experience
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Planning or other relevant area of study from a four-year, accredited university or equivalent work experience.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
- Knowledge of standard mapping principles and practices
- Knowledge of GIS concepts including coordinate systems, census geography, map scales, address geocoding, statistical analysis and cartographic methods
- Knowledge of data processing principles; ability to effectively utilize GIS computer programs of employing jurisdiction
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads and other employees.
Experience
- Minimum of four years of course work or experience in GIS database automation and maintenance.
- Previous work in a Public Works or Engineering Department is desired.
- Must have considerable experience with ESRI applications including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Field Maps and Trimble (or similar) GPS applications.

- Should have the ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods.
- Communication skills necessary for relating verbally to the general public by telephone or within the office.
- Flexible work hours may be necessary for overtime during peak work periods.
- Must be willing to travel to complete educational requirements and any continuing education that may be expected.
- Should have the ability to work outside during hot and cold weather and lift 25lbs.
- Must have a good driving record and be able to operate a motor vehicle.
