The Madison County Common Pleas Court Juvenile Division is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Probation Officer - Bailiff. He/She is responsible for the enforcement of all Court Orders and Conditions of Probation as Ordered by the Madison County Common Pleas Court Juvenile Division. A Probation Officer reports directly to the Juvenile Judge.

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THIS POSITION INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be considered as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

· Plan, direct, and evaluate all operations of the Department to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules and Court policies.

· Provide leadership, advice, and instruction to Department employees, and advice and counsel to the Judge on probation related matters.

· Continually analyze and evaluate the Department structure, work flow, policies, and procedures and develop revisions as needed.

· Develop or approve departmental guidelines, policies and procedures.

· Assist the Judge in managing Probation Department Grant Programs, and the preparation and submission of fiscal and program reports.

· Seek, review, and disseminate new case law and statutes pertaining to the criminal justice field to Probation Department staff.

  • Conduct and prepare predisposition reports, supervise probationers, and prepare recommendations for dispositions and expungements.
  • Inform, explain, and advise probationers of the terms and conditions of probation, including office visits, financial payments, educational/employment stipulations, treatment programs, curfews, and other special conditions ordered by the Court.
  • Complete and evaluate preliminary chemical dependency and mental health assessments of probationers and make treatment referrals.
  • Supervise probationers who are on electronically monitored house arrest equipment.
  • Supervise probationers’ participation in treatment programs. Also, obtain and evaluate provider records.
  • Monitor probationers throughout the term of probation.
  • Prepare Probation Violations, and testify as needed.
  • Execute arrest warrants as Ordered by the Court for those who violate terms and conditions of probation.
  • Update and maintain probation files and document each case on the Court’s case management system, to show compliance with Court orders.
  • Conduct field investigations at the probationer’s residence, place of employment, or as otherwise directed.
  • Report status of compliance and any violation(s) to the Judge and/or other Court departments as required.
  • Schedule and attend court hearings for probation violations.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with service providers in order to facilitate the continued flow and exchange of information.
  • Maintain and foster a professional and positive work environment in the Probation Office and Courtroom.
  • Monitor and/or administer urine and/or alcohol testing to ensure compliance with court orders.
  • Perform duties of Court Bailiff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

· Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in corrections, sociology, social work, criminology, psychology, or closely-related field.

· OR

· Minimum of TWO (2) years of experience as a probation or parole officer, corrections officer, or bailiff.

· Knowledge of the criminal justice system, courts, and probation-related theories, principles, laws, case law and operations.

· Ability to initiate and establish new programs, and to work within a team effort with Department supervisors and administrators to advance management objectives.

· Ability to make critical decisions in order to meet the Department’s mission.

· Knowledge of common office practices, procedures and equipment.

· Proficiency in operating a personal computer and using, or being able to learn, Microsoft Office products including Word, Outlook, Excel and the Court’ case management system.

· Good time management skills; highly organized and detail-oriented.

· Ability to prioritize work, work independently without daily supervision, perform a variety of duties, and manage a variety of projects simultaneously in a high pressure atmosphere under sometimes severe time constraints.

· Ability to effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing to diverse audiences.

· Pleasant personality; ability to interact and maintain effective working relationships with Judges, other elected officials, employees, law enforcement officers, lawyers and others conducting business with the Court.

· Conscious of and sensitive to the diversity within the Court’s jurisdiction and ability to interact professionally with this diverse population of people from many different geographic, socioeconomic, religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds on a regular basis.

  • Pass security and background check as well as pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, respond to questions from Court personnel.
  • Ability to work and communicate with Drug and Mental Health treatment community.
  • Ability to work and communicate with school districts, administrators, teachers, counselors, and other employees.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

The salary for this position shall be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience.
