About Our District
The Madison Metropolitan School District is the second largest school district in Wisconsin. The district serves a beautifully diverse population of more than 27,000 students. More than half are students of color. Almost half come from low income households. Nearly one third are English Language Learners, and more than 100 languages are represented in our schools. Purpose of Position:
Professional Development / Training:
Develop content / tools and facilitate staff professional development and workshops for students and families that enhance the development of Restorative Justice systems in their school. This involves influencing each person’s commitment to anti-racism, proficiency in taking anti-racist action, and skills in using restorative practices to transform school culture though deep work on relationships, belonging, and community building, as well as through responding to wrong-doing with a restorative approach.
Develop a network within district and community-wide infrastructure to enhance restorative justice partnerships, the use of restorative processes across the community and across systems, cultivate community-wide ownership that serves to hold systems (MMSD, Dane County, JRC, MPD, etc.) accountable for using a restorative approach, and uphold / oversee the integrity in the use of restorative processes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direct consultation to school leaders to apply a restorative leadership in their practice
- Provide professional learning that cultivates restorative mindsets among adults andincreases staff capacity to use restorative processes to promote student sense of belonging, cultural identity, and agency in learning

- Provide presentations and training to staff, families, and community members in restorative justice that develops awareness of systemic racism and its impact, elevates consciousness of bias and cultivates commitment to rewiring biases, encourages consistent use of anti-racist actions, and facilitates dismantling of racism in schools
- Provide direct services, coaching, and consultation as a restorative justice practitioner to address racial tensions and other issues as they arise including responding to critical incidents
- Serve as member of school critical response team to address and resolve complex issues; this includes an assessment of contributing factors, issues to address, and people involved and development of a plan (often with multiple levels / phases) to address relationships, power dynamics, racism / discrimination, etc.
- Engage in systematic debrief following the completion of critical response plan to consider adjustments to response structure / strategies, identify challenges that need to be addressed, and explore additional implications (i.e. staff PD, district procedures and practices, etc.).
- Participate in team meetings and professional learning
- Continue to develop the infrastructure for implementation of Restorative Justice in schools and for using restorative processes at all levels of MMSD as an organization
- Target development of structures that enhance authentic relationships and collaboration; integrate the use of restorative processes as a way of doing business
- Develop, implement, and sustain transition processes across systems that facilitate student and family engagement following expulsion processes and long-term absences due to incarceration, hospitalization, or other factors
- Develop and sustain community-wide infrastructure and contribute to oversight to ensure restorative processes are used with integrity across organizations
- Contribute to work across organizations to align objectives and key strategies for broadening and deepening use of restorative justice in schools and across the community
- Professional training, deep commitment, and high level of proficiency in all components of a Restorative Justice system in schools, including the use of restorative practices and the circle process
- Experience partnering with students with emotional and behavioral challenges, students of color, and their families
- Experience engaging in racial justice activism
- Experience in curriculum development and the use of non-traditional instructional strategies
- Strong commitment to equity; evidence of consistent application of a racial justice lens Evidence of exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including public speaking skills
- Ability to facilitate collaboration among members of different stakeholder groups (district / school staff, students, families, community leaders, etc.)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree. Official transcripts are required for formal employment.
- Applications are considered on a rolling basis. MMSD will consider applicants who are fully licensed before considering applicants who are not yet licensed.
- If you do not already have an active Wisconsin teaching license, you must obtain and maintain the necessary license(s) for the position. An application must be on file within 30 days of starting your employment with MMSD. Failure to do so will result in your contract being voided.
- The district does not provide financial support for the continued education that is required to achieve the certification. The district does not select or endorse any particular certification program that leads to the required Wisconsin teaching license. An unlicensed candidate can be considered, but they must be hired by a school district in order to apply for a One-Year License with Stipulations with DPI.
