Job Description
The Health Information Manager is responsible for the overall planning, development, and administration of the health information system for Madison Valley Medical Center. The Health Information Manager ensures that health information processes and procedures are consistent with the standards of accrediting and regulatory agencies. The Health Information Manager must have the ability to analyze and interpret business periodicals and industry specific professional journals to maintain current knowledge and competencies in health information management. The Health Information Manager is responsible for communicating pro-actively with members of the medical staff to identify issues and/or needs that are requested and must have excellent communication skills with the ability to respond to inquiries, regulatory agencies or community members and effectively present information to leadership, and/or the Board of Directors and responsible for the overall accuracy & integrity of the patient's medical records. General Responsibilities:
- Ensures CPT and revenue codes and modifiers are accurate for the charge value and pricing for physician fee schedule.
- Ensures charges are built correctly with appropriate coding to meet the standard requirements for specific procedures.
- Maintain and oversee the hospital and clinic charge masters in conjunction with hospital administration and department heads.
- Operational direction for Health Information Management (HIM), including ensuring timely and accurate coding of hospital, and physician charges.
- Prepares and administers the department's annual operating and capital budget within financial expectations, accounts for variance.
- Recruits, develops, retains, and leads an appropriate number of personnel to meet department needs and the goals and objectives.
- Supervision of HIM Clerks and Medical Coders.
- Develops an annual education plan to include updates and continued education specific to medical coding, release of information, chart abstracting and analysis, privacy, and regulatory rules and guidelines.
- Develops and maintains departmental policies and procedures to ensure security, confidentiality and release of medical records and acts as Custodian of Medical Records in compliance with current state and federal rules and regulations.
- Participates actively in continuing quality improvement and compliance in the Medical Record Department and hospital wide.
- Works with department heads and administration in establishing efficient methods for maintenance of the medical record in relationship to other departmental needs.
- Designs and implements production standards and quality control standards within the Medical Record Department.
- Plans the department in such a way as to facilitate the flow of work and achieve completion of the medical record as rapidly and as efficiently as possible.
- Develops and maintains methods of coding charts.
- Prepares and is knowledgeable with ad hoc reports to provide consistent, accurate, and timely data for internal or secondary reporting purposes.
- Maintains proficiency in proper medical coding and adheres to established coding guidelines and conventions, compliances policies, and coding updates.
- Medical Records completion and storage, transcription verification, clinical documentation improvement, patient releases of information, and data collection.
- Oversees online Patient Medical Records portal function and privacy.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Assists in evaluating current standards for completion of medical records and input of data into the record. Advises on possible actions to be taken in cases of incomplete records. 2. Works closely with Patient Financial Services, Registration, Administration, Compliance, and Privacy Officer. 3. Active participant in UR, QAPI, compliance, medical staff, and other committees as desired. 4. Reviews and makes suggestions on hospital health record forms and format improvements. 5. Performs other duties as required.
