Chief Engineer Job Profile
1.0 Position Title:
Chief Engineer
2.0 Nature & Objective:
To safely and efficiently maintain all mechanical equipment on the vessel and tow in a manner that complies with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and company policies.
3.0 Reports to:
Captain or Pilot on watch
4.0 Position Qualifications:
Must have sufficient experience gained through on-the-job training, supported by references pertaining to work performance, conduct, character, knowledge of equipment, and experience. These references will be verified by the Personnel Manager and Senior Vice President of Marine Engineering.
5.0 Responsibilities include the following:
The Chief Engineer, as well as all crew members, is responsible for the safety of the towing vessel and is responsible for compliance with the safety management system.
While on watch the Engineer must make hourly rounds of the engine room, adjacent areas and the barges.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for compliance with all applicable regulations.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for reporting unsafe conditions and nonconformities to thewheelhouse personnel on watch, for taking action to prevent accidents and ensuring appropriate resolution.
Efficiently and safely maintain the vessel machinery, hot oil heaters, barge engines and pump gear.
The Chief Engineer is the direct supervisor of any other engine room personnel (if any).
Oversee the transfer of fuel, water, and lube oil to the boat. Any fuel transfer, oil transfer or bilge-transfers must be in accordance with Magnolia Marine oil transfer procedures.
Ensure a PIC Designation Letter is completed and available for review for Chief and ReliefEngineers.
When transferring fuel, if the engineer must leave the pumping station, shut the pump down.
Routinely order machinery parts and engine room supplies on a timely basis. Emergency orders may be turned in at any time. The Captain must be kept informed and approve these orders prior to submission.
Maintain parts and inventory in an accessible and orderly fashion that is familiar to your relief.
In the event of delays such as channel delays, lock delays or other delays which occur in route and/or after the boat and its tow are safely tied off or otherwise moored, the main engines may be shut down only after agreement with the Captain or Pilot on watch.
Repair all machinery and equipment on board within your capability. If shore help is required, the Chief Engineer is to notify the Magnolia Marine office through the Captain or Pilot of exactly what the trouble is and what parts or assistance is needed.

Chief Engineer Job Profile
Any alterations to the boat or tow i.e. changes in living quarters or work areas, shelving, cabinets, work benches, etc. must be authorized by the Captain and office personnel.
Test and maintain the mechanical equipment aboard the barges being towed, loaded or unloaded. Such equipment includes but is not limited to pumps, pump engines, and hot oil heaters.
Complete the BoatSys log each day.
Remain knowledgeable of the maintenance and operation of firefighting equipment (i.e., fire hoses and nozzles, fire pump, automatic systems, etc.) available to or aboard the vessel.
Report any malfunction of fire equipment that is beyond his capability to correct to the Magnolia Marine Office for assistance.
Assist Captain in the preparation and posting of a station bill and in preparing emergency procedures relative to fires aboard vessel or tow.
Assist Captain in training crew members in operating all firefighting equipment aboard the vessel and tow.
Assist Captain in conducting fire emergency procedures and fire drills.
Ensure that the fire pump is always ready for use.
Take immediate charge until properly relieved in the event of fire aboard the vessel or tow.
Responsible for maintaining the engine room in a clean, neat, and orderly fashion in compliance with all applicable safety and environmental rules and regulations.
Assist with other duties as described by Captain or Pilot on watch when needed.
Attend training classes as required.
Train approved candidates as engineering trainees.
Employees must maintain a valid US Coast Guard Merchant Marine Document with a tankerman PIC dangerous liquids endorsement throughout their employment with MMT.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for adhering to the provisions of the Certificate of Inspection (COI), if issued.

The engineer position offers flexible schedules of 30/30, 30/15, and 15/15 as well as a sign on bonus of 2000 dollars.
