What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Project Cost Estimator position at Magnum Engineering?
We are seeking an estimator with in-plant Petrochem facility Estimating experience and validating a wide variety/size of chemical processing (expense/capital) construction projects (generally in $10k up to $15 MM range).
This is expected to be a long-term position with multiple levels of growth opportunities.
This position will be located onsite at our customer’s chemical manufacturing facility in Pasadena, Texas.
Responsibilities
- Develop Phase/FEL 1 (Concept) thru Phase/FEL 3 (Definitive) Estimates and Estimate Basis’s
- Validate 3rd Party Engineering Estimates
- Maintain/Build/Improve our past project estimate database, metrics, tools, processes.
- Evaluate/validate contractor & vendor quotes.
- Read/Evaluate/Perform take-offs on typical plant engineering deliverables, drawings, data, MTO’s etc. to develop estimate specs/quantities.
- Read/Evaluate typical plant project schedules to confirm alignment with estimates
- Identify and communicate cost/schedule/project gaps/concerns as they arise, through correct channels.
- Coordinate project estimate kick-offs/walk-downs/quote reviews
- Complete estimate final reviews with project teams/construction groups/turn-around groups.
- Complete change order estimates/validations
- Assist project controls with project budget (WBS) developments.
Required:
- 5 Years successful estimating experiences with similar plant projects (extensive knowledge of piping/equipment) and recent experiences estimating/validating multiple $5 MM projects.
- Strong Excel skills.
- Strong Aspen Capital Cost Estimator (ACCE) skills.
- Highly organized and able to successfully manage multiple projects with minimal supervision.
- Able to complete project walk-downs in typical (TX) plant conditions.
- Ability to read and speak English fluently.
- Valid driver’s license and passport with willingness to travel with little notice.
- Familiar with a wide variety of project types, estimating practices/methods, risk/contingency development, and commercial/estimating terminologies.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering or business
- 10 Years in a similar lead/senior estimating role in an Owner/Operator environment with multiple projects over $20 MM
- SAP experience within project/budget costs oversight/management
- AACE Membership and CEP certification
- Project Management Professional Certification (PMP)
- Contingency/Risk/Mitigation and/or monte-carlo type software experiences
Physical Requirements:
- This position is primarily in an office environment. However, field investigation of in-plant piping, civil, structural, or mechanical equipment requires the ability to don personnel protective equipment (PPE) such as flame-retardant clothing (FRC), hart hat, safety eyewear, safety footwear, fall protection harnesses or other specialty PPE. Ability to manipulate office materials and/or equipment and occasionally Lift, Hold/Carry 5-10lbs.

Required Climbing Abilities: To move up or mount stairs and ladders by using the hands or feet as required including, a step stool ladder, 8’ to 10’ ladder, extension ladder and/or stairs of 1-3 or more flights.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
