What are the responsibilities and job description for the Asphalt Laborer I-Physical Location-Butler, KY position at MAGO Construction Company, LLC?
POSITION SUMMARY: Asphalt laborers are essential to pouring, smoothing, and setting of asphalt on construction projects utilizing a variety of hand and power tools. The main role of the asphalt laborer is to look after the mat. This includes shoveling, raking, and lining out the road. This also includes monitoring the mat for quality. Laborer I is our entry-level position on a paving crew.
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred. Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required. Must have reliable transportation to and from jobsites. Must be safety conscious, self-motivated, and a team player. Must be willing to work long days, consistent overtime, Saturdays/weekends, and night shifts when a project or the nature of a project requires. Travel to other facility locations and service areas, including overnight stays, may be required to perform duties. Prior experience in construction work or asphalt paving is a plus but not required. A Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) or Permit is a plus.
SKILL SETS: Exceptional observation skills and attention to detail. Ability to multitask and set priorities. Effective communication skills and willingness to work independently and in a team environment. Strong problem-solving skills. Technical skills such as mechanical, equipment maintenance, welding, etc. would be a plus. Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. Must have the flexibility and willingness to learn new skills. Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with jobsite supervisors and fellow employees
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS: This position requires the following motions: standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending, shoveling, and raking. Regular physical effort is required, as is the physical stamina to work long days. Performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, and handling of materials. Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Walk and stand for long periods of time in all weather conditions. Vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral, depth, and the ability to focus. Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site; must maintain constant awareness and alertness to the motions and activities of other employees and contractors, equipment, and traffic. Will be required to work in varying weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures, and varying work environments, including rural, urban, noisy, wet, etc. Work environment exposes employees to levels of noise, grease, and dust typically associated with a road construction project. Frequent need to walk on uneven surfaces on the job site, including natural ground in varying weather conditions. Employees regularly work near heavy equipment, moving machinery, and live traffic.
JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS:
- General laborer duties associated with asphalt paving or road construction work.
- Safely operate a variety of asphalt construction and maintenance tools and equipment.
- Handling of hot mix asphalt and other road construction materials. Learn to identify and address deficiencies in the mat. Address deficiencies independently and/or at the direction of the Road Foreman/Forewoman.
- Assist others on the crew as needed or as directed by the Road Foreman/Forewoman. For example, cleaning the tailgate of a dump truck after it unloads or picking up haul tickets from a dump truck driver.
- Follow direction of Road Foreman/Forewoman as to daily tasks and expectations for each project or jobsite.
- Signal operators of construction equipment to facilitate alignment and movement of materials.
- Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Brings all matters to the Road Foreman/Forewoman’s attention.
- Assist in maintaining clean equipment and a clean job site. Must maintain a clean individual work space including free of personal belongings and the proper disposal of trash. Assist in securing equipment, tools, and the overall jobsite at the end of each shift.
- Assist in the placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and/or other traffic control devices.
- Communicate with and assist screed operators.
- Develop knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction and paving.
- Transport hand tools including rakes, lutes, and shovels to other employees or to their proper place on the paver or service truck.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently.
- Other duties as assigned.
