Accurately and efficiently performs a variety of laboratory tests, specimen collections, and maintains all departmental functions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Follows the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
- Performs testing in all areas including hematology, chemistry, serology, blood bank, coagulation, microbiology, and urinalysis using standard techniques and equipment at minimum of once per quarter. Also reviews the review queue results, makes appropriate corrections and adds to appropriate quality assurance plan.
- Completes proficiency testing in Care Learning, Media Lab, CAP and department competencies in the necessary time frame allotted by the designated personnel. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency-testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
- Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies, and documents all quality control activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Reviews peer quality control data.
- Schedules and Performs routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure. Prints, reviews, and signs off on maintenance logs where applicable. Records all troubleshooting on proper logs.
- Performs service calls to the necessary service departments including scheduling instrument PM’s.
- Performs validation for calculations, instrument interfaces, computer rules and auto verification.
- Review and update procedures and policies in Policy Tech should the need arise.
- Performs venipunctures, heelsticks, fingersticks, and other specimen collection procedures on all appropriate patients, within and outside of the hospital, in a competent manner that minimizes the need for repeat collections or complaints in compliance with AIDET
- Collects and processes specimens for urine drug screens and breath alcohol following the federal guidelines.
- Processes outpatients, inpatients, emergency department patients, and patients outside the hospital facility by ordering the proper testing and having the proper distribution listed.
- Distributes reports by fax, mail, or in-house distribution to the proper physician and/or location.
- Maintains work area in clean, orderly, and well-labeled condition.
- Performs Centrifuge maintenance as required per manufacturer.
- Collects specimens from the dumbwaiter and nursing units as needed
- Research requests from patients, physicians, nursing units, and other entities for information or reports.
- Advises Laboratory Management of recommendation for procedure modification, supply inventory needs, preventive maintenance needs, etc. Authors procedures.
- Performs self-inspections and changes per our accreditor.
- Performs department credits and correction reports, and rejections.
- Ability to travel and work remotely if the position should require remote or travel according to the laboratory director’s approval. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
- Provides clinical training and orientation and supervision for new or less skilled laboratory personnel records level of competencies with follow-up competencies as required by CAP.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions; ensures compliance with Joint Commission and other external and internal regulatory agencies.
- Maintains the integrity of confidential patient information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policy, including accessing, using and disclosing patient information relevant to the individual employee’s job duties. Also maintains confidentiality of other customers and hospital business affairs.
- Adheres to the standards of Magruder Hospital’s corporate compliance policies and seeks guidance and training when necessary to resolve questions about the policies. Reports violations in accordance with corporate compliance and organizational standards. Attendance is an essential function of this position. Reports to work on time and as scheduled; Shows respect for co-workers by following established break times; Keeps personal conversations and telephone calls to a minimum.
- Provide training for new employees and students
- Evaluates performance of bench technologists
- Review and verify bench technologist competency levels
- Creating and Maintaining Staff Competency programs within their department
- Provides updates to Media Lab coordinator for lab staff mandatory review
- Coordinates with reference laboratories
- LabCorp patient specimen troubleshooting and Follow-ups
- Monitors and verifies quality assurance
- Monitor and verifies downtime results
- Verify manual results were processed correctly in a timely manner
- Place tickets with IT and followed up
- Reviewing and Maintaining all required documents for our accreditation inspection
- Reviewing all manual processes for potential streamlining and cloud capabilities
- Reviewing and responsible for their own departments QUALITY MANAGMENT PROGRAM review queue and addressing any concerns found
- Monitoring and Recording mishandled, rejected, recollections, and downtime logs within department. Provide records of overall process for reporting.
- Revise department Policies and Procedures addressed by self-inspections
- Rotate and discard inventory and other unnecessary logs after the allotted time frame
- Verify calibrations are performed on correct lots and point data
- Review, verify and submit quality control data online and to pathologist for review
- Performs Inventory monitoring, reviewing and investigating potential changes to improve efficiency, expenditure and waste management
- Perform Credits that need to be made on patient accounts
- Perform Fin number result revisions
- Perform Procedure Review and Editing in Policy Tech
- Perform self-inspection for assigned department
- Perform comparison control studies
- Perform carry over studies as required
- Perform calculation verification linearities as required
- Delegate as needed for tasks that should arise to assist with meeting deadlines
- Continuously investigate techniques and develop improvements within their department aimed to improve efficiency, enhance patient satisfaction and decrease expenditure within the guidelines of our accreditor

Schedule hood maintenance
Perform blood culture volume audit
Perform blood culture result audit
Ensure Pipette calibrations are performed annually
Perform CO2 HEPA filter maintenance semi annually
Annually ensure Culligan bulb and UV light is changed
Perform IQCP WA audit is calculated annually
Prepare and Verify antibiogram
Perform Gram Stain quality control and gram stain competency
MIC validations when applicable
Review and Credit C. diff rejections
Culture DI water for microbiology testing
Perform Quality control Report from Micro MIC instrumentation
Populate, review and distribute Walk away and Cerner reports
- Bachelor’s Degree in Science-related field.
- Numerical ability required to calculate test results using standard formulas, and to measure prescribed quantities of samples during tests.
- Color discrimination required to stain slides and to distinguish various shades and colors of specimens.
- A preference for scientific and technical activities required to perform a great variety of laboratory tests and to keep abreast of the latest innovations in methods of testing.
- A preference for activities carried out according to established processes and techniques in performing laboratory tests.
- Keen judgment to evaluate information against measurable criteria in the performance of tests.
- Assume responsibility and function by working independently without constant direct supervision.

Preferred:
- Valid MLS/MT ASCP Certification with at least 3 years of technical and phlebotomy experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
