JOB GOAL: The responsibility of the Speech and Language Therapist is to evaluate, diagnose, and treat students with speech or language disorders and to formulate individualized education programs, keep appropriate records and inform faculty and parents about students’ progress. Also, to help reduce or eliminate speech impediments that interferes with the individual student’s ability to derive full benefit from the district’s educational program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Pennsylvania State license as a Speech Pathologist
· Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited university
· A minimum of two years experience working in the speech pathology field
· Demonstrated ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty members, and parents so that all parties understand the program and degree of progress being made
· Computer literate and competent with word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
· Such alternatives to the above qualifications that the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable
REPORTS TO: Special Education Supervisor
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participates in the selection of all supplies and materials used to conduct testing and evaluation
- Serves as a resource to school staff members in the development of an IEP for oral communication and speech improvement
- Assesses the needs of children with speech or language disorders and matches their needs with programs available through the educational system
- Meets with students regularly according to IEP schedule, evaluates, and maintains records of students’ progress
- Reports progress to faculty members and meets with them on a regular basis to discuss their evaluations of students’ skills as demonstrated in class performance and social interaction with other students
- Assists and guides Teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments
- Collaborates with classroom Teachers and other school staff members to implement therapy by suggestions for the student’s daily activities
- Participates as a member of educational teams (IST, MDE, IEP)
- Prepares evaluation and re-evaluation reports for use in school records as well as in preparation for IEP review or development
- Provides a thorough assessment and diagnosis of speech, voice, and language impairments
- Keeps thorough and ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.
- Provides in-service education and serves as a consultant to Teachers and school staff members on topics concerning speech improvement.
- Provides appropriate individualized programs of therapy to meet individual students’ needs and correct existing speech or language impairments
- Provides screening to identify speech impaired children at regular intervals and at specified levels
- Reports progress to parents and meets with them regularly, suggests activities the parents can do with their child to assist and supplement the student’s speech therapy program, and attempts to add to their understanding of the program and answer questions or concerns they may have about it
- Maintains confidentiality of reports and records within his/her jurisdiction
- Keeps current with professional literature and attends seminars on a regular basis to maintain and update professional skills

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work year as per teachers’ contract. Salary and benefits to be established by the Board of Education.
