What are the responsibilities and job description for the Associate Employment Attorney (with great work-life balance) position at Maier Law Group?
Maier Law Group (MLG) is looking for an experienced (3-5 years) employment attorney to join us in an associate attorney role. The job entails providing advice and counsel to employers and conducting workplace and Title IX investigations, as well as workplace trainings. The firm also mediates both legal and non-legal (i.e. informal) workplace conflicts, though it is not necessary to have experience in that area.
Ideally, we'd like someone who is versed in conducting workplace investigations and has experience providing employment law advice and counsel. Speaking Spanish would be a major plus. High emotional intelligence and a positive, can-do attitude is vital to this role given how much work we do in non-traditional areas of law. It is also essential that the person be an excellent writer, given how much report-writing we do.
This is a great opportunity for someone who wants unbelievable work-life balance for firm life (we almost never work more than 40 hours a week, billables are 20-25 hours a week as a rough target), flexibility, an incredibly supportive workplace culture, and to work with a great team of women attorneys and paralegals.
The candidate could be located anywhere in the greater San Francisco Bay Area and would work from home (unless they wished to come into our office in Marin). There is flexibility in the role in terms of working part-time or full-time.
About Our Firm
MLG is a woman and minority owned firm that has a unique raison d'etre: we look beyond the law to see how effective policies and practices can create a great company culture that will attract top talent and customers. Businesses who work with us understand that MLG “is out to change the world for the better, one happy employee at a time.” Happy employees mean minimal workplace conflict and lawsuits. It also means our clients naturally attract and retain employees who embody their values, effortlessly execute the company's vision, and reflect a culture the company and its employees are proud of.
In terms of our own culture, the partners strive to create a firm that is compassionate and caring: modeling the culture that we try to impart to clients in our advice and counsel work. We considered what was missing in the legal community, particularly for women, that left attorneys feeling unhappy and dissatisfied, and decided that too many talented women attorneys did not have the flexibility they needed or wanted, and did not feel adequately appreciated or supported by their firms. They were also not working in a way that aligned with their values. We hire carefully at MLG, choosing attorneys at the top of their game but also seeking autonomy, flexibility, and an affirming workplace culture and team. Everyone at MLG is extremely happy to be with the firm, and there is a high-trust, low-drama culture. In this way, MLG has built
a small team of women attorneys
who are excellent lawyers, love what they do, and are completely committed to one another and their clients. While no workplace is perfect, the partners understand that employees are the firm’s most valuable asset and try to impart this teaching to their employer clients as well. About The Position
Ideally, MLG is looking for someone to start as hourly or partial salary (20-30 hours a week) doing non-full-time work, and then move the person into full-time work if they want it (40 hours a week). There is flexibility in terms of staying part-time, or deciding to work full-time from the start and staying there. Needless to say, the tradeoff is a lower salary than at a corporate law firm. We can add more salary for someone who comes in with their own book of business, and generally give a generous year-end bonus, depending on the year’s profitability.
This is an opportunity to grow into as much of a role as the person wants (partnership and rainmaking one day possibly) or remaining as associate or senior counsel to do billable work.
Benefits include unlimited vacation (but non-accrued), paid sick time, a 401 K plan, disability, health and dental insurance.
Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume to Diana Maier and Margarita Wear. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who you think may be interested.
