Maine Audubon Coastal Birds Outreach Coordinator

Position Description: As part of a broader collaborative effort to recover endangered coastal birds and reduce population declines of migratory shorebirds, Maine Audubon seeks a communications and tech savvy individual to reinvigorate our Pets 4 Plovers social media campaign, help launch a campaign to reduce shorebird disturbance, and expand existing outreach efforts educating the public about the ecology and conservation of beach-nesting endangered birds. The position will work alongside the Coastal Birds biologists educating the public about nesting Least Terns and Piping Plovers, and disturbance of migratory shorebirds on beaches in Southern Maine. The position will focus on communicating with the public, landowners, municipalities, pet owners, and others about the ecology, conservation, and disturbance of our endangered coastal birds. The position will be a combination of in person interactions on the beaches, website development and updates, and maintaining a social media presence.

Primary Duties include:

Re-launching and managing a Pets 4 Plovers social media campaign.
Developing and maintaining a project website as an educational platform to spread information and resources on how pets can better share the shore with imperiled shorebirds.

Creating new content for online based outreach strategies on social media and through blog posts. Contacting and engaging with the media to highlight shorebird conservation efforts in Maine.

Organizing and leading educational opportunities for the public, including presentations, tabling, and community events. Connecting with and educating new audiences by distributing informational materials and swag.

Assisting the Coastal Project with management, monitoring, and other tasks as needed.

Key Partners: Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands, USDA Wildlife Services, and numerous municipalities, private landowners, and volunteers.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in wildlife or environmental science helpful
  • Experience with public relations, communications, environmental writing, or related field
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a team player
  • Experience and passion for talking with and writing about science for the public
  • Effective, engaging, and diplomatic communicator both verbally and in writing
  • Skilled at developing and strengthening relationships with a variety of partners and audiences
  • Ability to successfully plan, organize, and execute outreach events
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a project independently
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Ability to work strategically in a fast-paced environment with many partners
  • Demonstrated management of social media and published content
  • Clean driving record for last 5 years preferred

Details: Position is full-time in-person and runs from late March through August, 2023. Some weekend and evening work required. Stipend $680-$720/week when full-time, prorated for part-time. Housing not available through Maine Audubon, although we can assist in finding options nearby. Maine Audubon is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
