Job Description

Are you an experienced facilities management professional looking for a leadership role in a dynamic academic environment? The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking a Director of Facilities Management to oversee the operation, maintenance, and strategic planning of the university's physical assets, infrastructure, and grounds.

About the Role

Reporting to the Chief Business Officer, the Director of Facilities Management provides leadership and strategic direction to ensure UMF's campus remains safe, efficient, sustainable, and conducive to academic excellence. This role oversees housekeeping, maintenance, construction, and capital planning while ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct facilities operations, including custodial, maintenance, and grounds management.
  • Manage the campus motor pool and oversee snow removal operations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA and ADA requirements.
  • Oversee budget planning and financial management for facilities operations.
  • Respond to campus emergencies as needed during off-hours.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing facilities management team, fostering a culture of accountability and customer service.

Salary : The normal hiring range is $75,000 to $90,000 commensurate with the candidate's training, education, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required :

  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, schedule, coordinate, direct, and control all aspects of physical plant activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, and to develop and manage a master plan for a large institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainable facilities and energy management practices.
  • Demonstrated success in budgeting and managing capital facilities projects.
  • Demonstrated excellence in clearly expressing ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated success in timely, effective communication with constituents.
  • Demonstrated success at managing a budget and ability to foster a respectful, safe, and positive workplace environment.
  • Ability to introduce and manage change.
  • Ability to foster engagement and voluntary cooperation.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based applications personal computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel), and Google Workspace applications (e.g., Google Docs, Sheets, Gmail, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse constituencies.
  • A proven track record of progressively responsible experience managing a large and effective team with a commitment to superior customer service and collegial decision-making.
  • Willingness to be accessible and available to UMF to ensure proper management and operation of plant activities.
  • Preferred :

  • Strong technical skills and computer literacy including the development of sophisticated spreadsheet models, regular reporting of key performance indicators, and experience with CMMS systems.
  • Qualifications

    Required :

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and three to five years of related professional and managerial experience or the combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability and knowledge to provide leadership for the planning, development, and operation of a complex facility.
  • Minimum of two years in a supervisory position.
  • Preferred :

  • Experience in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and experience applying ADA accessibility regulations.
  • Experience with environmental safety regulations (OSHA, building and fire codes, parking regulations, etc.) and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience with bidding, renovation, and building contractual procedures.
  • National Information Management System (NIMS) emergency training at the 100 and 200 levels.
