Job Description

WMPG Community Radio station is seeking a Youth Radio Assistant.

The WMPG Youth Radio Assistant main duties will be to :

  • Recruit, retain, and train young members, staying true to the spirit of community media and the principles of journalistic ethics.
  • Assure that members are recruited from a wide range of area schools and youth-serving organizations; promotes equity and anti-racist approaches
  • Oversee weekly live show from planning to production
  • Supervise the youth who produce WMPG's weekly youth program, Blunt Youth Radio
  • Work as a team with the show night producer and the founder / other volunteers
  • Know and keep up to date with WMPG operations, including engineering, audio editing and live programming
  • Seek out and manage professional partnerships and local collaborators
  • Use the principles of positive youth development in working with young people in order to facilitate a positive and safe learning community for youth participants and assists in bringing their ideas to the radio
  • Foster an appreciation of and commitment to community radio and media in order to build loyalty to WMPG as a community media home
  • Manage program materials, technology, and other online organizational tools
  • Manage the Blunt Youth Radio social media accounts

The Youth Programming Assistant will be given training to enable them to effectively carry out the job duties. They will be trained by Blunt's founder, and some alumni and past assistant managers. The Youth Programming Coordinator reports to WMPG's Program Director and will have check-ins at least twice per month. In addition to working alongside the Program Director for programming orientation, they will also coordinate with the Station Manager regarding financial orientation, and with the Development Director regarding station fundraising and social media.

This position is 10 hours per week and will pay $22.00 / hour.

WMPG is a Non-Commercial Educational FCC licensed radio station owned by the University of Maine System and is the premier community radio station of southern Maine. Located on the campus of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in Portland, broadcasting locally, as well as streaming online.

WMPG radio was formed 50 years ago by a handful of students who started making radio in their dorm room on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine (USM). We are USM's radio station and are housed within the Portland campus. Currently our volunteers are made up of community members, students, and university Staff.

  • Previous experience in audio and radio production, with a focus on documentary / journalistic features.
  • Past experience working with teenagers.
