Job Description

The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) is seeking a Residential Director & New Scholars Advisor to be part of the 2025 UMF Summer Upward Bound (UB) Program . This is an exciting opportunity to engage with high school students in innovative and creative ways. The Residential Director and New Scholars Advisor provides direct support to Upward Bound participants, living in the residence hall. Advisors plan and facilitate daily activities for students and participate in all aspects of the summer program, including overnight supervision.

Compensation : $15.00 per hour. This role is grant-funded and contingent upon the continued availability of external funding.

Schedule :

  • May 27, 2025 - June 16, 2025 : Approximately ten (10) to fifteen (15) hours per week, with a variable schedule based on department needs, with flexibility to accommodate the candidate's availability whenever possible.
  • June 17, 2025 - August 1, 2025 : Full-time (40 hours per week). The typical work schedule is Sunday evening through Friday afternoon.

Essential Duties :

  • Advises New Scholars in small group settings, evening activities, and daily programming.
  • Creates bulletin boards and posts daily schedules along with essential information for students and staff.
  • Coordinates healthcare matters when the house manager is unavailable, calling parents as needed.
  • Implements student check-in and check-out from the program.
  • Delivers Upward Bound SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) curriculum to New Scholars through Advisor Group sessions and daily programming.
  • Writes comprehensive evaluations of assigned students.
  • Assists with staff scheduling and responsibilities.
  • Supervises bedtime hours and resides in the residence hall during scheduled shifts.
  • Provides students companionship, support, and positive role modeling.
  • Encourages and guides students' intellectual and personal growth.
  • Assists with end-of-summer clean-up in the residence hall and other Upward Bound spaces.
  • Participates in the UB Community Standards Committee.
  • Participates in staff meetings to discuss program progress, planning, and student concerns.
  • Plans and facilitates daily activities for students in areas of academic, career, and health, wellness, and personal development.

    Required Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of college experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Expertise in one of the following areas : residential life, career development, or college transitions
  • Experience working with adolescents
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience with, or understanding of, the challenges faced by low-income students who will be the first in their families to attend college
