POSITION OVERVIEW

The Mechanic Apprentice will be under the direction of the Transportation Director. The Apprentice will learn and assist in all maintenance aspects of the School District’s Fleet, maintain a safe, clean garage environment and keep tools in good working order.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Learn to assist and perform preventative and routine service on District vehicles as maintained at the MSAD No. 75 Transportation Garage.
  • Learn to conduct required safety and operational inspections of District vehicles, to include brake systems, gauges, emergency exits, fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.
  • Assist Mechanics in the maintenance and cleanliness of the bus garage and yard.  This may also include snow removal from the busses or vehicles as needed, to include plowing and sanding of the yard and walkways.
  • Follow all MSAD No. 75 District and Transportation Department’s rules, processes and policies.
  • May fuel District vehicles as needed or directed. 
  • Learn all safety aspects of a public school Transportation Department. 
  • May ride with Transportation Employees on occasion to observe driving protocols and student management. May observe, assist or interact with students during these occasions. 
  • If over the age of 21, the Mechanic Apprentice may train and work towards obtaining a State of Maine Class B License with School and Passenger endorsements. 
  • Learn appropriate procedures and methodologies in cases of mechanical failures, delays in scheduled route or accidents.
  • Learn the importance of interior maintenance and cleanliness of Fleet vehicles. 
  • Interact with District Employees and others in a corporative and respectful manner. 
  • Performs other related duties as trained and assigned.
  • Special projects as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • The Apprentice must be 18 years of age and may be a current student of MSAD No. 75, hold a high school diploma, or a HiSET/GED.
  • The Apprentice will be interested in the field of mechanical repair, with specific focus on school buses, mini buses, vans and all other applicable vehicles within the field of public education.
  • Interest or experience in routine maintenance and service of vehicles.
  • A valid Maine Class C Driver’s License in good standing. 
  • Maintain positive interactions with Employees and others at all times.
  • Interest in learning the field of vehicle and mechanical repair and maintenance. 
  • Must be willing to work safely in all aspects of the Transportation Garage at all times.
  • Interest to pursue and attain a State of Maine Class B license with School and Passenger endorsements preferred.
  • Interest in attaining State of Maine Inspection License and/or other ACE units. 

 

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Primary work location: the Transportation Garage (indoor and/or outdoor work in all weather conditions).
  • Environmental: Temperature extremes (Seasonal) Hot/Humid & Cold
  • Hazards: Lifting, moving material, tripping, diesel fumes, slippery surfaces, heights.
  • Equipment Utilized: Hand & power tools as trained, to include other garage safety items to assist with daily repair and maintenance. May also operate, maintain or repair small engines to include, snow blowers or other items. May utilize shovels and other cleaning equipment or supplies as needed.
  • Safety Equipment: The Apprentice shall wear steel-toed footwear at all times. Use of hearing and eye protection as trained. Use of a dust mask as required.

  • Sitting:  1-2 hours
  • Lifting/Carrying:  3-5 hours, up to 50 pounds
  • Pushing/Pulling/Sliding:  3-5 hours
  • Reaching Overhead:  3-5 hours, above the shoulders and horizontally
  • Bending/Twisting:  3-5 hours
  • Kneeling/Crouching/Crawling:  3-5 hours
  • Hands/Arms/Finger Dexterity/Hand Gripping:  6-8 hours
