Job Description
The Lead Water Operator is a hands-on position with overall responsibility in leading the daily operation of the Town of Berwick’s municipal water system.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
System Operation and Stewardship: The Lead Water Operator is responsible for the daily operation and maintenance of the Town’s water treatment facility and distribution system in compliance with the public health and water quality requirements of the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Maine Rules Relating to Drinking Water. The Lead Water Operator works closely with the Maine Water team to plan for the proper maintenance, replacement, and expansion of the water system, in accordance with company standards and professional water works industry guidelines.
The Lead operator is responsible for collecting required compliance samples and compliance data and working with the Maine Water team to report data to the Maine Drinking Water Program. This includes the ability for the water systems to meet or exceed all regulatory standards for drinking water.
The Lead Water Operator has responsibility to ensure the safety of division employees through the administration of the company safety program.
The Lead Water Operator will work closely with the Maine Water team to identify capital improvement needs in the water system as well as help lead capital improvement efforts during planning and construction.
The Lead Operator is responsible to respond to emergency after hours, during weekends, and on holidays, as well as be in the on-call rotation for the system.
Community Relations: The Lead Water Operator assists the Superintendent in developing and maintaining positive relationships with the communities in the division. This includes having personal knowledge of the community leaders and municipal officials in the division. This also includes developing and maintaining positive relationships with large water customers in the divisions. This position is required to attend Town Select Board meetings and other stakeholder meetings as needed.
General Qualifications:
- Valid Drivers' License required; CDL preferred.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be able to communicate clearly in verbal and written form, and have legible handwriting.
- Must demonstrate the proper regard for the use of time and equipment, and an awareness of the responsibility to safeguard the water supply and prevent pollution of area surface water.
- Have the ability to successfully work as part of a team and communicate effectively with the public.
- Be able to follow written and verbal instructions and regulations.
- Must have demonstrated computer skills.
- Must be available for reasonable overtime work and be available for emergency on call duty when necessary to provide service to the public.
Minimum Qualification
Must have or have the ability to obtain in a reasonable amount of time:
Maine Water System Class IV Treatment License-
Maine Water System Class II Distribution License
- Maine Wastewater Operator Class Certification
