What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cable Designer position at Mainstream Engineering?
Position Summary
Due to continued growth, our firm is seeking a talented Engineer, Engineering Technologist, Engineering Technician, or CAD Designer for a role which will include designing, prototyping, and capturing/maintaining drawings of complex cable harnesses for a variety of our product lines. The ideal candidate for this role will enjoy working with their hands, be detail-oriented, appreciate organization, and be able to think spatially about 3-dimensional problems. An average week being our Cable Designer will consist of both hands-on work building cable prototypes and working with CAD software to create accurate drawings representing those cable prototypes. Mainstream provides this role as an opportunity for a motivated individual to perform CAD work but still be able to work with their hands.
Specific Duties:
- Compose bills of materials (BOMs) for complex cable assemblies
- Submit purchase orders to procure components for building prototype cables
- Construct and document prototype cable assemblies
- Use AutoCAD software to create representative cable harness drawings based on prototyping notes
- Work with existing Mainstream processes in compliance with AS9100 standards
- Create engineering change orders (ECOs) related to cable harness drawings, including initial creation and revision updates
- Manage part numbers and specifications in compliance with existing Mainstream processes
- Work with Product Development Engineers & Program Management to ensure on-time delivery of documentation
Position Requirements:
- United States Citizenship required due to US Government ITAR program restrictions
- One of the following:
- 2- or 4-year degree in any engineering discipline
- Experience (or degree) as a CAD designer or draftsman
- Experience as an assembler or technician at an engineering or production firm
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with, designing, assembling or testing cables
- Experience with EMI and/or environmental testing
- Familiarity with relevant IPC standards (ex, IPC-620-WHMA)
- Familiarity with basic hand tools; familiarity with more cable-specific tools is even better
- It is strongly recommended that applicants genuinely enjoy performing hands-on work.
