What’s the Role All About?
As an Underground Construction Operator , you’ll be at the heart of the action, running the Directional Drill to install and maintain fiber optic cables underground. You’ll also be responsible for keeping your equipment in top shape, which includes daily maintenance, cleaning, and transporting the drill rig and truck. You’ll work with the construction team to ensure everything runs smoothly — from drilling to placing fiber optic cables in underground systems, such as manholes. Your contributions will make a real difference in building out networks that power communities.
Your Day-to-Day :
- Master the Drill : Safely and efficiently operate the Directional Drill (HDD) to install fiber optic cables underground.
- Keep Things Running : Perform daily maintenance on the drill rig and truck — a clean, well-maintained machine makes the job go smoothly.
- Teamwork : Work with the locator to plan the bore path and assist with utility spotting, equipment setup, and the placement of fiber and duct.
- Hands-on Work : Help with digging, potholing, and making sure all equipment is set up and ready for action.
- Cross-Train : Be open to learning new skills, like becoming a drill locator and gaining new expertise.
- Stay Organized : Complete daily production forms and project activity reports to keep everything on track.
- Safety First : Follow all safety regulations and procedures — you’ll be working with equipment that demands careful handling.
- Physical Labor : This job involves lifting, moving materials, and some good old-fashioned elbow grease.
- Keep Things Clean : Make sure your vehicle and tools are always organized and ready to go.
- Flexibility : Help out where needed to ensure the team meets project goals, from traffic management to installing equipment.
