What are the responsibilities and job description for the Irrigation Specialist position at Maintenance Department?

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Install and maintain irrigation systems for all athletic fields and/or grounds. Maintain safe and attractive grounds and landscaping for the district.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Texas Driver's License
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of irrigation installation and repair
Knowledge of gardening and landscape maintenance
Ability to direct and supervise personnel and coordinate grounds operations
Ability to operate heavy equipment, including backhoe and trencher
Ability to operate riding or power mower, trencher, power tools and hand tools
Experience:
One year supervisory experience
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Grounds, Maintenance and Landscaping
1. Draw up irrigation layouts for fields
2. Estimate the cost and time required for irrigation projects
3. Install irrigation pipe and valves, run wire and hook up timers
4. Establish water schedules and set irrigation systems accordingly
5. Inspect irrigation systems and make necessary adjustments and repairs
6. Mow and detail all district grounds
7. Care for trees, shrubs and flowers by watering, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, caring for beds and controlling weeds
8. Plant shrubs and vegetation
9. Assist with the preparation of athletic fields, if required for games, including painting fields
10. Water grounds and apply fertilizer
11. Collect and dispose of leaves, dirt, rubbish and refuse from district facilities
Safety
12. Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures
13. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
14. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately
15. Ensure that vehicles, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition
16. Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventative maintenance as needed
Inventory and Equipment
17. Coordinate the storage and use of irrigation equipment, tools, and supplies
18. Prepare, implement, and maintain preventative maintenance and repair procedures for irrigation systems
19. Order irrigation equipment and supplies and maintain accurate records
20. Recommend replacement of existing irrigation systems
Other
21. Transport workers and equipment to work sites throughout the district
22. Attend school/training sessions as required
23. Perform other duties as assigned by Head Groundskeeper, Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Director
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
EQUIPMENT USED:
Heavy equipment, including backhoe, trencher, and grade blade; tractor and mower; riding and power mower; gas-powered weed trimmer, blower,; edger, sprayer, striping machine, garden and hand tools; aerator, light truck or van.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands/Physical/Environmental Factors:
Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting and carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside and around moving objects or vehicles. Exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals (herbicides and fertilizer), and loud noises. Frequent district-wide travel.
