MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

Work Week Schedule: Monday – Friday
Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week (some evenings and weekends may be required in emergencies)

PURPOSE
Edenton-Chowan Public Schools (ECPS) is seeking skilled and collaborative individuals to join our Maintenance Department team. We are looking for team members with expertise (or potential for skill development) in various trades, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and general maintenance. Maintenance team members are responsible for maintaining, repairing, and—depending on certification and skill level—installing or constructing projects that support and improve all ECPS facilities.
ECPS provides an opportunity to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Technicians are engaged in varied hands-on work that supports our schools and community.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on school buildings and equipment.
- Assist with installation and construction projects as needed.
- Work both under supervision and independently, depending on skill level and experience.
- Collaborate with senior Maintenance Technicians and the Supervisor to assess work orders and complete assignments.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes.
- Respond to maintenance requests promptly and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum education High School Diploma; Associates Degree (preferred but not required).
- Experience in one or more trade areas, such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, or general maintenance.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively within a team.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to different maintenance tasks.
- Certification or licensure in a relevant trade (preferred but not required).
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver materials and equipment as needed.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & SUPERVISION
- Assignments range from routine supervised tasks to independent repairs and installations.
- Work orders and job assignments are coordinated with senior Maintenance Technicians or the Supervisor.
- Work performance is reviewed by the Supervisor and/or local government inspectors.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to stoop, kneel, walk, crawl, lift, work in awkward positions and enclosed places. Must be physically able to drive a car. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing 75 pounds. Physical demand requirements are for heavy work. Must work inside and outside as required. May be subjected to high dust areas, inadequate lighting areas, high moisture and wet areas, maintenance and cleaning chemicals, and extreme hot and cold areas.
Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments, or directions to subordinates or assistants.
Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using a prescribed format.
Reasoning Ability: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.
Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, to add, subtract, divide, and multiply.
Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes to accomplish maintenance tasks.
Manual Dexterity: Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk, see, and hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands- Light physical work required; up to 20 pounds of routine lifting, with heavier weights occasionally
Work Environment- Inside and outside environments; direct contact with staff, students, and parents
