TRADES - PLUMBER - MAINTENANCE
POSITION SUMMARY
The School District is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Plumber – Maintenance Trades to join our maintenance team. Under general direction, the Plumber will perform skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems, including water, drainage, heating, and boiler systems. This position requires expertise in troubleshooting and repairing plumbing systems, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and plumbing codes, and maintaining district facilities in optimal working conditions.
In addition to plumbing-related tasks, the Plumber will occasionally perform semi-skilled and skilled duties in other maintenance trade areas as needed. The ideal candidate is a problem-solver, a team player, and someone who takes pride in maintaining safe and functional school facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment across district facilities.
- Diagnose and resolve plumbing issues, including leaks, pipe damage, and drainage problems.
- Install and maintain water heating systems, low-pressure boilers, and related piping.
- Perform backflow prevention testing, installation, and maintenance to ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
- Tap into water and sewer mains and laterals as needed.
- Repair or replace pipes, control valves, and various plumbing fixtures.
- Cut, thread, and join pipes using appropriate techniques such as soldering, welding, and press-fit methods.
- Clear obstructions from drains, water lines, and sewer systems.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure all plumbing systems function properly and efficiently.
- Test and maintain boiler water and safety equipment for proper operation.
- Maintain, repair, and install swimming pool plumbing and filtration systems, as needed.
- Estimate labor and material costs for plumbing-related projects.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and equipment maintenance.
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal plumbing codes and safety regulations.
- Operate a district service vehicle to travel between job sites.
- Maintain an adequate inventory of plumbing supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Provide guidance and coordinate tasks with other maintenance personnel as necessary.
- Ensure all work is completed efficiently and safely with minimal disruption to school operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Methods, tools, and best practices used in plumbing installation, maintenance, and repair.
- Washington State plumbing codes and regulations.
- Backflow prevention systems, testing procedures, and compliance requirements.
- Safe work practices related to plumbing and maintenance work.
- Basic principles of heating systems, boilers, and drainage systems.
- Proper handling and disposal of plumbing-related hazardous materials.
- Blueprint reading and interpreting technical schematics and diagrams.
Ability to:
- Skillfully install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems and fixtures.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and work orders.
- Work independently and prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose plumbing problems accurately.
- Estimate time, labor, and materials required for repairs and installations.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare concise reports.
- Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with staff, vendors, and contractors.
- Follow oral and written instructions with minimal supervision.
- Maintain a high level of safety awareness and adhere to all district policies and procedures.
- Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor in all interactions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 75 to 100 pounds.
- Climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, and roofs as needed.
- Work in confined spaces, crawl spaces, and trenches.
- Stand, walk, bend, and stoop for extended periods.
- Use hands to operate hand tools, power tools, and plumbing equipment.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Occasionally work in environments with exposure to dust, fumes, and chemicals.
- Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
Experience:
- Minimum two years of journey-level experience as a plumber, preferably in commercial or institutional settings (e.g., schools, hospitals, or large facilities).
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Additional coursework or training in plumbing techniques, safety regulations, and maintenance preferred.
License & Certification Requirements:
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
- Washington State Journeyman Plumber Certification (PL01 or PL02) preferred.
- Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BAT) certification is desirable but not required.
- Ability to obtain necessary certifications and licenses as required by the district.
