Job Summary:
The Lead Custodian will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating custodial staff to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of the school facilities. This position will require a hands-on approach to daily cleaning tasks, as well as the leadership skills to manage and support a team of custodians. The Lead Custodian will work closely with the school administration to maintain a positive, clean, and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and Lead Custodial Staff:
- Assign daily tasks to custodians and ensure work is completed to the highest standard.
- Provide training and guidance to custodial staff on cleaning techniques, safety protocols, and equipment use.
Cleaning and Maintenance:
- Perform and oversee routine cleaning of classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and other areas within the school.
- Ensure floors are swept, mopped, vacuumed, and maintained.
- Clean windows, restrooms, and other facilities, ensuring supplies are ordered, stocked and functioning properly.
- Maintain outdoor areas by ensuring grounds are clean and safe (e.g., picking up litter, clearing walkways).
Facility Safety and Maintenance:
- Monitor building systems (lighting, heating, cooling, etc.) and report issues to the appropriate department.
- Ensure safety standards are followed, including proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Inventory and Supply Management:
- Order and maintain custodial supplies and equipment in sufficient quantities.
- Track inventory and ensure all necessary tools and cleaning supplies are available.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Serve as the point of contact between the custodial team and school administration.
- Coordinate with teachers and staff to accommodate special requests related to cleaning or facility needs.
- Attend and contribute to staff meetings as necessary.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous custodial or janitorial experience, including supervisory or lead experience, preferred.
- Knowledge of cleaning equipment, supplies, and techniques.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills. Bilingual a plus.
- Ability to lift heavy objects, bend, and stand for extended periods.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to custodial work is a plus.
- Must pass a background check as required by the school district.
