Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
An employee in this class uses a variety of tools and equipment to maintain grounds including planting, cultivating, spraying, pruning, and cutting plants, trees, shrubs, grass, and flowers, and provides on-site leadership and training. This employee determines the care and treatment necessary to maintain grounds. To assure an attractive and orderly landscape, non-routine problems concerning the selection, placement, care, and treatment of plants. Limited supervision is given. The employee serves as a lead worker in providing direction to crew members.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Ability to obtain, but not required - Commercial Driver’s license (CDL)
- Experience driving trucks while pulling trailer to transport grounds maintenance equipment such as backhoe, PTO tractor with batwings, side arm, bush hog, etc.
- Lift up to 100 lbs., stand, climb, and sit
- Must be able to work independently with little supervision
- Must hold a pesticide applicator's license based on State requirements, as directed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture within one year of employment
- This employee must hold an appropriate North Carolina driver’s license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE OF WORK
- Establish and enforce operating procedures and work standards
- Schedule work for crew, depending on work priorities, crew or equipment availability, or weather conditions
- Inspect completed work to ensure conformance to specifications, standards and contract requirements
- Plant or maintain vegetation through activities such as mulching, insecticides, herbicides or fungicides
- Train crew members in tasks such as pruning trees or shrubs, using equipment or caring for turf
- Gives directions for corrections as needed
- Reports outstanding or unsatisfactory work and behavior to supervisors
- Maintains paths or dirt road surfaces
- Drives trucks and transports tractor and ground maintenance equipment
- Makes minor repairs to mowers and other equipment
- Inventory supplies of tools, equipment or materials to ensure that sufficient quantities are available
- Maintain required records
- Provide crew with assistance in performing duties as necessary to meet deadlines
- Performs ground maintenance duties such as using tractors equipped with attachments, mowers, spreaders, chain saws, snow removal equipment and heavy duty power equipment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Working knowledge of grounds keeping and elementary horticultural practices
- Working knowledge of planting, cultivating, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of flowers, shrubs and trees
- Skill to transport and knowledge of use of tractors and other maintenance equipment
- Ability to use, sharpen and make minor repairs to tools and equipment
- Ability to follow oral or written instructions
- Ability to follow simple landscape sketches and designs
- Ability to coordinate the efforts of a group of employees
- Ability to train other workers
- Ability to provide leadership to employees in this class
STATE RANGE
Pay Grade 59
$2705.84 - $4110.85 per month
(based on 0-30 years of experience in a school system)
