LMR Property Description:   Lone Mountain Ranch (LMR), situated on 148 acres in beautiful Big Sky, Montana, was first homesteaded in 1915 and has long been recognized as one of the premier guest ranch resorts in the country. The property consists of 30 rooms located within 24 unique cabins as well as the Horn & Cantle Restaurant and Saloon, the Ranch Hall, the Outpost, equestrian facilities, event venues and meeting spaces.  Position Summary:  The Teamster is responsible safely driving horses and operating sleighs for Sleigh Ride Operations.  The Teamster also assists guests with seating at the dinner and serving as required.  When not actively engaged in Sleigh Ride operations, Teamsters care for horses and maintain equipment.

Position Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, the Teamster must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility in a safe and satisfactory manner, must be punctual and have a good attendance record and have reliable means of transportation to work. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • A Teamster must have a minimum of 5-years’ experience working with horses, sleigh driving preferred.
  • Requires an occupationally significant combination of vocational education, apprentice training, on-the-job training, and essential experience in less responsible group sales and event management positions.
  • Must have a valid Drivers’ License and meet insurability standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents in English such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, newspapers, periodicals, journals, and manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, business letters, summaries, and reports in English using prescribed format, and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. 
  • Ability to speak effectively in English with customers or employees. 
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must walk on uneven slick conditions in extreme weather conditions

 Position Duties include, but not limited to: 

    • Safely operate the horse-drawn sleighs of up to 16 guests behind a team of draft horses for the Sleigh Ride Dinner
    • Assist servers with guest orders and process requests in a timely manner, including opening bottles of wine, bus and set up of tables, washing dishes and drink preparation.
    • Feed and water the horses, catch, groom, and transport horses.
    • Harness and hitch horses to sleigh
    • Oversee the health and safety of all horses.
    • Inspect sleigh before each trip to ensure curtains are connected, lights working, sleigh free of snow, sleigh is properly connected, and safety chains hooked
    • Communicate any issues with tack, equipment of trails to Lead Teamster or Horse Program Manager.
    • Drive the Sleigh trail as mapped out while maintaining high hospitality standards
    • Unhitch and stable horses, lock up and put away equipment, clean and tarp sleighs
    • Assist guests into and out of the sleighs
    • Required to fold blankets after sleigh rides, up to 60 blankets
    • Sweep snow from seats of sleighs and clear sleighs of snow
    • Administer basic first aid to horses if there are any kicks, bites or scrapes on horses; report any health issues that may require vet service to manager
    • Ensure that horses are properly cooled and stabled after each shift
    • Must be able to think and work as a team player
    • Deals with the public, customers, employees, community member and government officials with tact and courtesy, fostering positive relationships and maintaining an appropriate level of community public affairs involvement
    • Maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and provide support to other departments as needed.
    • Ensure guest satisfaction with excellent customer service, attention to detail and quality delivery.
    • Complete all paperwork and timecard entries in a timely manner.
    • Comply with Company’s operating controls, SOP’s, policies, procedures, safety, and service standards.
    • Communicate with the Human Resources regarding employment term, attendance, injury, issues, and housing.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; Comfortable bending (hook up sleigh, pulling out stairs for guests).   The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Must have excellent hand and eye coordination (horse pulling sleigh on narrow pathways).  Must have good night vision and operate equipment at night.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Majority of work is outside, must be able to sit for long periods of time in the cold
  • Must be able to work effectively in a stressful environment, communicate well with others, effectively deal with guests, and accept constructive criticism from supervisors.
  • Must be able to change activity frequently and cope with interruptions.
  • Must be able to work when needed which may include early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays. 

HOURLY EMPLOYEE & SEASONAL EMPLOYEE BENEFITS

  • Seasonal Bonus Program:
    • All hourly employees will be able to participate in our seasonal bonus program.  Each hourly employee will receive $1 per hour worked per season and $1.50 per overtime hour worked. Employees who are terminated or resign from their position before the end of each season, will not be able to participate in this program. If the season is cut short due to business levels, the employee will still participate in this program.  Positions that are contracted at a shorter term, like the Outdoor Youth Adventures program, this employee will be able to participate in this program.  All hours worked outside of these seasonal ranges will not apply to this bonus program. 
  • Staff Cafeteria:
    • We also want to keep you hydrated and nourished. You will have access to our staff cafeteria which provides 3 meals a day, as well as a large selection of grab and go items to suit anyone’s day.
  • Ranch Gratuity:
    • In addition to your hourly rate, you will receive a ranch gratuity unique to us.
  • Ranch Wide Activities:
    • We also understand that every full work week requires a little me time. And what better way to unwind than to take advantage of the many summer activities the ranch has to offer? As long as there are openings, you have free access to the following in the summer season: horseback riding, Outdoor Youth Adventures Program, Yellowstone National Park Tours, yoga, and mountain biking.  During the winter months, you will have access to 50 Miles of world renown cross country ski trails right outside your back door.
  • Health Insurance:
    • If you remain with us and worked a minimum of 1560 hours in a 12 month look back period, from your first day of employment, you are eligible for medical, dental, life and vision insurance. This will be effective the first of the month following 30 days of your full-time employment hire date or status. The Ranch will pay for 80% of the premiums for employees and any dependents. Employees will be responsible for paying the remaining 20% of the premiums. Payment is deducted automatically from the employee’s semi- monthly paycheck at a pre-taxed rate. 
  • Arrival
    • While we know that we are in one of the most beautiful and sought-after destinations in America, we also know we are a little off the beaten path. The ranch will provide complimentary transportation to and from the airport, should you come to us by air.
