This position requires the ability to work in the Salem, MA offices.
The Business Banking Underwriter conducts detailed research on the financial history of businesses and individuals to determine their creditworthiness-adequacy of repayment resources and collateral. They review and verify income statements, tax returns and other financial documents to develop a borrower's profile and arrive at a credit recommendation, per Bank product guidelines and loan policies and procedures. Decisions made on issuing new loans or lines of credit are, in part, based on the credit underwriter’s recommendation. The BB underwriter works closely with loan officers and may assist them with verifying the accuracy of loan applications, in addition to working with BB team members in a collaborative environment. BB underwriter may also propose revisions to the credit limits or interest rates on the existing loans of qualified borrowers. Credit underwriting for Business Banking as well as potential Middle Market accounts may also be required (time permitting), in addition to some reporting responsibilities.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to the following:
Analyze and underwrite various loans and loan commitments to ensure that they adhere to existing policy guidelines, regulatory guidelines and documentation requirements to adequately ensure security of collateral.
This position has individual approval authority as outlined by the bank’s loan policy as well as joint approval authority with the team’s other underwriter.
- Administers and reviews existing credits to protect the quality and profitability of the loan portfolio.
- Identifies potential problem loans and monitors their progress as part of watch list process.
- Assist in identifying and developing and implementing “best practices” for the BB Lending Department with an objective of standardization, where practical, of approach and process throughout the Division.
- Promote the company’s presence through participation and attendance at various civic and charitable events/organizations.
- Participation in special projects assigned in order to assist with growth/improvement BB loan portfolio, as assigned.
- Compliance with banking laws and regulations as defined in company policies and procedures pertinent to position.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Previous credit training/underwriting experience is required.
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; and two to four years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Business undergraduate degree with relevant finance and accounting course work preferred.
