The MakeSpace Vision, Mission and Approach to Religion and Community Building
VISION
Our vision is to build an inclusive community of God-conscious, compassionate and empowered American Muslims
MISSION
MakeSpace is an inclusive community organization empowering American Muslims to flourish spiritually and intellectually while becoming more socially and civically engaged citizens.
Approach to Religion and Community Building
- We believe there is tremendous richness in the totality of the Islamic tradition. The tradition consists of infallible divine revelation as well fallible human interpretations. Reasonable people can disagree about the validity of the various interpretations.
- We will actively strive to avoid polemics that have historically divided the ummah and focused heavily on irrelevant, anachronistic debates. Since possessing the entirety of ultimate truth is only befitting to God Almighty, within the tradition we are committed to seeking love for all humanity, mercy towards all creation, unity of the ummah, balance between extremes, and most importantly relevance to our daily lives and our socio- cultural realities and challenges.
- We encourage members of the community to strive to build a personal relationship with God and lead productive, ethical lives. Our programs seek to realize this by encouraging the community to seek meaning in our practice of the faith’s essentials.
- We advocate critical thinking over blind following and strive to build a community where men and women, young and old, are all valued and served equally without regard to race or national background.
- Without being antagonistic, we strive to choose opinions within the Islamic tradition that level the playing field for women. Not only is this approach the right thing to do as a matter of principle, it is also an excellent way of keeping the Islamic tradition relevant in these challenging times.
- For our communities to thrive, civic engagement and serving the larger society are critical. Working on common aspirations with the larger society, especially members of other faiths, is also an Islamic imperative.
