GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESCourthouse Security Deputy/Jail Corrections Deputy will perform the duties of a sworn law enforcement officer by providing security and law enforcement for the safety and good order of the general public, government officials, and employees within the Malheur County Courthouse, and upon its premises, or at such other locations as may be necessary to ensure the security of the general public, the state courts, and county employees and officials in the course of their duties.This position may also be assigned to perform corrections deputy work in the Malheur County Jail. Work is performed to provide care and custody of adult prisoners and to maintain order and discipline among the prisoners of the Jail. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS OF THIS POSITION Courthouse Security Deputy/Corrections Deputy shall operate under the law enforcement and daily supervision of the Sheriff, and under the direct daily supervision of the Lieutenant/Jail Commander and/or under the general supervision of a Senior Corrections Officer or Corrections Sergeant.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).Carry a firearm and provide a uniformed security and law enforcement presence and a timely response to any situation within the Malheur County Courthouse or on its premises when necessary to maintain order, ensure public safety, or to enforce the county ordinances, orders of the courts, or the laws of the State of Oregon. Appropriately intervene to ensure public order and safety and security of all staff and the public.Establish a visible presence either by periodic patrols of the buildings or at the fix site located at the front entrance of the Malheur County Courthouse.Perform arrests or detentions as necessary, following the policies on use of force and arrest/detentions as prescribed in policy by the Sheriff or his designee.Monitor security systems and alarms within the building to ensure appropriate response, as needed. Maintain contact with security monitoring systems and off-site monitoring center via a pager or radio. Ensure security systems and monitors are in good working order by periodically inspecting and testing; report deficiencies to building maintenance as appropriate.Periodically patrol the facility grounds and parking lots to ensure security and parking ordinance compliance, and cite, warn or arrest offenders as appropriate.Assume responsibility for the evaluation of dangerous or potentially dangerous situations and directing the appropriate emergency response, or assume control of response in the event of any emergency situation such as fires and fire alarms, bomb threats, catastrophes, civil disturbances or other emergencies.Staff the screening station and maintain proficiency in operating magnetometers, X-ray machines and other devices and with other methods used to screen individuals assessing courthouse facilities and services.Act as a liaison for the Sheriff’s Office with local law enforcement and support agencies, and with the public and all county and state court employees.Secure building doors at beginning and end of day.Maintain all necessary training and proficiencies in coordination with the Sheriff’s Office.Provide security escort to public officials and/or public property.Provide special event security to the state courts as needed or requested.Investigate incidents and crimes as needed and follow through to completion. Submit reports, make arrests as needed and testify in court. Skill in: Proficient in interpersonal communications, both verbally and in writing; good customer and public service skills. Skill in effectively and professionally interacting with staff and the public, to include combative or violent individuals. Proficient in problem solving and non-confrontational conflict resolution. Proficient in reading and writing English; bi-lingual in Spanish preferred. Ability to: Maintain proficiency with firearms and all job-related equipment and tools, and current training requirements as prescribed by the Sheriff; lawfully carry a firearm; function appropriately in stressful and volatile situations; ability to move quickly and respond to emergencies; ability to stand for long periods of time; ability to subdue combative persons and remove them from the courthouse, as required by the situation.
