What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Malletts Bay Veterinary Hospital?
Malletts Bay Veterinary Hospital is a growing, 6-doctor practice, providing complete care to our canine, feline patients. We are seeking a full-time veterinary assistant who has excellent client communication and telephone skills, is customer service oriented, and is friendly with staff and clients. The ideal candidate must be able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and have basic computer literacy skills. The candidate must be able to work well independently and in a group. Experience in the animal field is preferred but not required. Starting wage will be based on prior experience if any.
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Ability to learn and properly use practice management computer software and computers.
- Must be able to administer injections.
- Perform venipuncture and measure vital signs.
- Properly restrain animals, including fractious pets, for examination and treatment.
- Administer treatments/medications intravenously, orally, and subcutaneously.
- Light reception duties include admitting patients, preparing estimates, answering telephone calls, scheduling, etc.
- Properly dispense medications, pet foods, and supplies.
- Maintain and update patient files.
- Review vaccination records and prepare vaccines according to our vaccine protocol.
- Assist veterinarians in surgical procedures using proper aseptic technique.
- Maintain and use medical equipment such as IDEXX in-house laboratory equipment.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures and analysis in hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, and serology - Prepare samples for outside laboratory analysis.
- Maintain pharmacy records, and controlled drug logs.
- Properly position and take radiographs.
- Complete ear cleanings and nail trims - Perform other duties as assigned
Other: Other duties include maintaining a clean and sanitary environment. Have the ability to lift 50lbs and be able to stand and be on feet for long periods of time. Must possess good critical thinking and problem-solving skills, be compassionate, have a positive attitude, good follow-through, and excellent communication and teamwork skills. Upon hiring, all new employees will be subject to a 90-day probationary period during which time employment may be terminated as determined by management.
Work Environment: Small animal hospital, work in front and back of the hospital, high level of client interaction, exposure to x-rays and anesthetic gases with proper protective measures. Potential for exposure to zoonotic diseases and possible hazardous materials.
