TITLE:             K-5 Multilingual Language Learner (MLL) & Learning Assistance Program (LAP) Teacher

 

REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

 

POSITION SUMMARY
The K-5 Multilingual Language Learner (MLL) teacher is under the direction of the Building Principal. This position requires the employee to identify eligible ELL students, organize and deliver appropriate MLL/ELL instruction to all proficiency levels, partner with general education staff to help with implementation of SIOP strategies/components and ELP standards, monitor newly exited MLL/ELL students (Transitional level) and work with classroom teachers to recommend support strategies or interventions as appropriate, advocate for students, and facilitate parent engagement efforts and activities.
The classroom teacher, under the direction of the Building Principal, will create a program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth of students which facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in life, and establish good relationships and rapport with students, parents and staff members. The teacher will document student progress, activities and outcomes; address specific educational needs of students; and provide feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals. The teacher will maintain professional competence through in-service education, coursework and professional growth activities.
Teacher for reading and math intervention for students in grades K-5. This position requires the employee to identify, screen, and provide reading, reading readiness and math intervention services to eligible students.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • Valid teaching certificate for the State of Washington with required endorsement in area of assignment
  • Possess a K-8 endorsement and an ESL and/or Bilingual endorsement
  • Experience teaching elementary MLL/ELL or recent training and/or knowledge regarding English language acquisition, MLL/ELL curriculum and instruction
  • Experience with Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) components
  • Training or experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and families
  • Preferential consideration given to those fluent in Spanish
  • Prior experience in the school setting preferred
  • Such other qualifications as the Board and Superintendent may find appropriate
  • Current valid CPR and First Aid may be required for the specific assignment
  • Experience providing small group intervention in reading, math and reading readiness
  • Training or experience with the Washington State K-12 Reading Model, including the five essential components of reading


Special Requirements

  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)

Knowledge:

  • Washington State Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program guidelines, including identification, placement, and assessment requirements
  • Washington State Learning Standards (WSLS, aka - Common Core State Standards), Smarter Balanced and Measurement of Student Progress
  • English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPs)
  • Principles, goals and objectives of public education
  • Curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Current intervention strategies such as small group instruction, differentiation, sheltered instruction, etc.
  • Training and supervision of paraeducators

Skills and Abilities:

  • Identify potential MLL/ELL students and administer the placement test to determine eligibility
  • Organize and deliver appropriate MLL/ELL instructional curriculum to help K-5 students successfully meet academic standards
  • Foster English language acquisition and enhance academic progress
  • Communicate with classroom teachers regularly and participate on building teams and/or committees
  • Provide classroom teachers with support and appropriate strategies and ELP standards to use with ELL students in the general education classroom
  • Provide on-going professional development for SIOP instructional strategies and ELP standards
  • Organize and support state-required testing
  • Maintain files with required paperwork for each student in the ELL program
  • Provide District ELL office with updated student information as requested
  • Complete and distribute all necessary ELL forms
  • Participate on the child study team or multidisciplinary team when a student in the ELL program is discussed. Share information of assessing and serving ELL students with special needs.
  • Provide ways to involve parents in school events; advocate for English language learner parents/students
  • Willingness to work in a co-teaching model
  • Provide small group intervention in reading, reading readiness and math
  • Use research-based instructional strategies for intervention
  • Observe district assessment schedule and provide Curriculum and Instruction department with updated student information and assessment data as requested
  • Abide by all district policies and procedures along with building/department practices
  • Adhere to federal, state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures & practices
  • Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, fights, substance abuse, etc.
  • Abides by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Maintain regular punctual attendance
  • Perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff
  • Work with minimum direction, but as an effective member of the team

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.
This is a sedentary position with light work that involves sitting a portion of the time, but does require walking and standing for extended periods. This position requires accurate perception of sound, near and far vision, depth perception; handling and working with
educational and psychological materials; and providing highly technical oral and written information and reports.

The job is performed with the majority of the spent indoors and under minimal temperature variations; a portion of the day will be time spent outdoors and is subject to a variety of changing weather conditions and potentially uneven/slippery surfaces.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
This position is that of K-5 ELL teacher and is represented by the Monroe Education Association collective bargaining unit. The position will work a schedule in coordination with the District student calendar. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement. Employee is required to complete all mandatory district trainings.

 

EVALUATION PROCEDURES
The classroom teacher shall be evaluated by the Building Principal according to currently established district procedures and evaluation criteria. The process shall include an evaluation of the employee’s performance of the above position responsibilities.
